I had the IH dealer replace the rear rims with new ones awhile ago. I noticed that he used carriage bolts to attach the rims to the tractor. Is this the right way to do it or should some other type of bolt be used? It just seems to me like a lot of stress would be on the head of the carriage bolt. I don't see any markings on the head to indicate they are grade 5 or 8 so I'm further concerned that the carriage bolts might be just grade 2. What are you guys using?

Pete

Mine have been running for several yrs now on a B with a loader and wheel wts. You dont have enough wt and power to ever break them. Those are aftermarket rims and thats the bolt required.

Sounds some of the aftermarket rims that I have seen. The carrage bolts are the only type of bolt that will hold them on because they are a straight through box with no backing in it. The orginal rims had a box with a back in it and used a square head bolt to attach it.

Surely they used a good bolt but if I were you I would ask them what grade bolt they used. You can also check to see if there is a back on the box to see if you can change to a square head bolt. Just take one bolt out and look inside the box to see if there is a back in there or if it is an open back.

GOOD LUCK
