I have an M tractor that has what I have discovered is a 3 bolt starter. It looks very different then the starter on my friends "H". Could someone explain the differences and the reason for them? Thank you

Yes,your tractor should have 3 bolt. The controls were changed when live hydraulic was offered from IH but they didn't all come with it.You should have battery under seat,on off switch in amp box cover,if equiped with belt pulley gearbox operating rod located on left side, voltage reg. on steer post and choke and starter rod in bracket
bolted to left side of gas tank rear support. The gas tank rear support will only have one hole in it toward rear of tractor about 3/8 or 7/16 inch in diameter.

Unless you have a diesel or a later SM tractor the clutch housing has been changed sometime. If
starter has engaging switch on top with a rod to engage its later SM style starter.Several other starters would bolt up or could be made to work though.Without picture or discription,Don't know which starter you have.My opinion on why IH went to 3 bolts is less breakage and the use of same clutch housing on later SM and SMD instead of two seperate Housings for Diesel and Gas.One other thing, later on IH sold replacement clutch housings
that were 3 bolt starter.Same M starter with different drive housing.

DMV This 3 bolt does have some type of rod mechanism on top of it. I assume the 3 bolt connection is stronger, but what is with that rod mechanism on top?

The SM starter I was referring to used a rod to
operate starter switch. The rod is seperate from starter.2 other starters you may be looking at,one with electrical selonoid on top that has a
rod running forward to engage bendix, other type mechanical linkage that completes electric circuit
to starter and also engages bendix at same time.
This type would be like used on SMD serial # 28175 and up.Or you may have starter with just
electric selonoid on it.

Even though I have never seen one my book lists Hs With 3 bolt also on the Hs and Ms after a certain serial they changed at least thats what my aftermarket book shows. I would imagine they did it becuase of breakage caused by torque. JON

Early Super Ms have 2 bolt starters (at least the ones I have seen) 3 bolt H and M must be some special application. I have 1940 M, 1941 A and early 1953 Super M and have switched starters around on them and they will all interchange (A has aftermarket solenoid and not switch on starter).

I always thought Super M went to 3 bolt when they switched to live hydraulics guess I was wrong again. Have owned 3 early SMs and they were all 2 bolt but none of them were Louisville tractors.
