I have a blade on the back of my 504. Now the old 966 has a set of sway block affairs that keeps everything from movern about when the 3pt. arms are down. This old girl has not. What is used to keep the implement steady? I don't see anything in the books I have. I'm a little tired of running the blade sloppy too. So here are my true colors. Anyone tell me what I'm supposed to do? I know there is supposed to be less play than I have.

I originally skipped this post because I know nothing about 504's. But,if your 504 has a Category 1 blade on a Category 2 hitch, there will be excessive play because the Cat 1 pins on the blade are spaced closer than the cat 2 hitch is supposed to run. If everything is Cat 1 or 2 and there is no adjustment as is indicated in your post below, I would put turnbuckles in the linkage. On the JD's I have driven the sway blocks can be turned for Cat 1 or 2. I bet Alan's tractor has adjustments on the sliders on his also, although his tractor is getting big for Cat 1 implements.

504 should have chains and turnbuckels.

These used a sway bar setup as used on the older Ford and Fergusons. Bracket under the axle housing in line with draft arm pin with arm going back to blade pin or whatever. These were adjustable arms. TSC and others sell an similar arm for around $20 that works fine with a little bending on one end. I only use one on my 504 and it does fine.

I'd guess you need those sway bars like the Ford tractors have. They bolt to the rear axle and come out to the three point pins. Sorry if I'm not thinking of the same thing you are.

We use a three link chain to hold our two bottom blades in place. You might try that. You may need to weld a link onto the body. We did.

Mornin' Slo,

Is your hitch built like this one? If so, it takes pins droped into the slotted portion of the sway arms.

Dark out there this morning, but I did find that old grease rag I lost last summer. :>)

Thanks for freezen yur arss for me Allen but no, mine has chains where yours has slides (a lot more rust and grease too). I have tried to tighten the chains and it is less sloppy but still way to much play. Dark there yet but check my sunrise on Tales. I decided to get a photo of it. Sunrise is one reason I rarely sleep in.

Aw,

You must have the Utility version 504 with the CAT I hitch?

I think I read somewhere that in order to tighten up those types of hitches, you must first load the tractor up on a flatbed truck, haul it to town and trade it in on a row crop version. :>)

I have no idea; used to borrow the neighbors tractor with one of those hitches and never could get the thing stiffened up. Dunno.

Nice sunrise, by the way,

Allan

Can't you take a link or tow out of the chain on each side to take out the slop? We twisted the chains on a 180 Massey to take the slop out, but thoes were much hevier chains.

I don't know anything about that setup but do remember that on the Cockshut 20 and 30 that my dad had a long time ago the 3 point had chains that were crossed from one side to the other and that was about all that kept the slop out.
