When driving in 4th gear I was hearing what I thought was a bearing noise in the transmission. I have taken the transmission cover off and everythin looks ok, no bearing parts or metal shavings. My question, should the gears on the main drive shaft have any play on the shaft or should they be snug along the shaft? I have a little play back and forth along the shaft, there also seems to be too much play between the bevel gear and the pinion. Do you tighten that by adding shins or taking shims out?

Hi, many years ago when we had a C then a SC they both had a natural whine in the transmission in 4th gear and they were both new.

A bearing can have a cracked or pitted ball and not drop any visible pieces. You need to check them each closely.

Check the oil slinger gear and see if the teeth are still all there.
