When out of TA my 300U goes great, but in TA under load the tractor slows almost to a stop while the engine still labors, taking it out TA moves it right along. Is the TA clutch slipping? Are the TA ratchets slipping? There is no extra noise associated with this problem.

Paul If the engine is stil laboring and you go almost to a stop as you say you got more wrong then just the ramp and rollers. Do the adjustment and try it again, but I would say you hace some bad bearings as well. If just the ramp and rollers it should just stop with not much engine labor.

First step first=adjust the ta and both clutches then go from there..Right now it sounds like the ramp and rollers are bad that doesent cost to much to fix but you have to split and split again and follow lots of I.T. directions but you really know them when you get them back together...Last ta i did was a super MTA and it was fun..Ramp and rollers for it was $100.00 said it was rebuilt but it sure looked new to me and they are fun to use...

Definetly sounds like your ramp and rollers are on the way out. The Mechanical TA used in the smaller IH's is a planetary unit. It is made up of an input shaft, a 7" clutch, a planetary carrier, the planetary unit, the overrunning clutch, known as the ramp and rollers, and the output shaft. Power enters the unit through the input shaft from the engine clutch. When the lever is ahead, (DD), the 7" TA clutch locks the input shaft to the planetary carrier, and the whole assembly rotates as a unit, resulting in no reduction of speed. When the lever is pulled back, the TA clutch disengages, allowing the power from the input shaft to enter the primary sun gear in the center of the planetary unit. The primary sun gear turns the primary planet gears, which are attached to the secondary planet gears, which turn the secondary sun gear, which is splined to the output shaft, resulting in the gear reduction. If the planetary carrier wasn't held still with the lever back, it would just freewheel around the planet gears, and the tractor would not move. This is why the overrunning (one-way) clutch, or ramp and rollers, is used. It is located between the output shaft and the planet carrier, and locks up whenever the planet carrier tries to turn faster than the output shaft. If it goes bad, the planet carrier will just freewheel. One more thing about the ramp and rollers- since it is a one-way clutch, it will lock up whenever the planet carrier tries to turn faster than the output shaft. However, if the output shaft tries to turn faster than the planet carrier (traveling downhill in TA) the ramp and rollers will overrun, causing the tractor to freewheel right down the hill. That is why you never go downhill in TA.

Paul: Those TA are not very forgiving, once they have slipped they are usually toast. This is why it is so very important to recognize when out of adjustment, and immediately adjust to the letter and by the manual. Close doesn't count with these.

The TA clutch is ingaged when in direct.Probably your ramps and rollers are bad or sticking and causeing it to slip.

Hey Paul,

It sounds to me like you are talking backwards (sorry, if you're not). :>)

The T/A is engaged when the stick is back. Is this when your tractor slows?

If it is slowing with the stick forward, your main clutch is slipping and this is why the tractor sounds like it is still laboring. (BTW, it ain't a gonna last too long this way)

Oil on the main clutch will make 'em do that, but it is with the stick forward.

Just not following you????

With TA engaged (low range) under load tractor will almost come to a halt.Engine labors but wheel rotation almost stops.
Under high range (no TA) there is zero slippage at the clutch (just at the tires! lol)

T/A clutch may not be fully disengaging, one possibility.

Paul, if the problem was in Direct Drive, then it could be caused by the TA clutch linkage being out of adjustment. However, there is no adjustment that will effect the ramp and rollers. Once they start slipping, they're toast.
