Looking for info before I go an screw something up. Is there a trick to removing the tachometer drive on a farmall 460D. I have an old drive out of a 560D and it looks like it just slips in. Being as ignorant as I am I can't figure out how to get the old one out and make the new one stay in.

Sure would appreciate it if someone could enlighten a novice tractor mechanic(don't mean to insult true mechanics but couldn't think of a better name).

The early drives were held in with clips like the gas distributor. The later type was driven into the block. You can try to pull it out of the block, but more than likely you will have to remove the oil pan and drive it out from the bottom.

I removed most of the old oil and grease and have yet to spot anything holding it on. I think it is a later model 460, 1962.

I've given a few halfhearted tugs with a pair of water pump pliers and nothing budged. I may pull out the bigger artillery to see if I can get something to budge. If not I'm going to wait until it gets warmer to crawl around on the ground.

Thanks for your help.

parts book shows only one drive so yours should work.remove the nut holding the cable. then remove thehousing which holds the gear assembly in.with the housing out remove the assy gently.should be a broken shaft on the pencil gear.willprobably need a pair of needle nose pliers.i would count the teeth on both gears and measure the shaft diameter.while you hve that out i would recommend putting some grease on the tach cable andtrying to spin to make sure it turns freely and that the tack works.good luck

Thanks for the info,

Is there a trick to removing the housing? Don't see what's holding it in place. Once I've removed the housing, is there anything I need to be careful of? You say I should notice a broken shaft and should be able to fish out with needle nose. It can't fall further can it?

My cable was twisted off near where it screws into the drive. Haven't checked the tach itself. If the cable turns the needle, am I ok?

Thanks again for your help.

housing as they call it in the parts book is where the gear assy gets most of its support.mine was a broken shaft and maybe i shouldnt have stated that.once you get the housing off you will see how easy it is.thre is casing under that area so i dont think it will drop in the distributor drive are.cant be certain in that.if your cable twisted off i would expect it to be a probem in the tach itself or in the cable and housing.if where it twisted off in the cale housing is rough i would go with a new gable and housing.the cable where it goes into the housing is nothing but the end of the cable which has been put in a tool that you hit with a hammer and it comes out square.that fits into the gars assembly.the cale is softer than the gear assembly and will usually wear faster.usually it will round the square corners off the cable.i dont think your gear assy will be bad but it may pay you to pull it and check the square end of it with a new cale end.the cable may have broken off part way in the gear assembly.hard to tell what you have without seeing it.remember to lube the cable before you put it back together.we used to use a graphite greas but others may use another lubricant.it should be lubed periodically to make sure there is no resistance when turning.dont mean to ramble on.hope it helps

the housing is what the cable housing connects to on the side of the dristributer.turn it counter clockwise to remove.good luck

This helps some but I have a diesel, not gas. When I take the cable off the gear assembly, I can't turn the gear assembly. I don't know if I'm supposed to be able to.

When I take the small gear out it appears to have all the teeth. The top of the gear assembly isn't flush like the one I have from the 560. So I'm betting that my problem lies somewhere in the gear assembly, other than the twisted cable. I still haven't played with the tach, who knows probably have a problem there too.

Thanks, I appreciate your help.

can you turn the gear assy in the retainer with it removed? if you can turn it with the housing out and not able to turn it with the housing installed the gear assy is not the problem.there has been a few posts on the forum where the tach head goes bad after a certain number of hours. if the cable is bad at the end the problem is in the cable or the head
