My brother and I are heading up to look at a "parts" M this weekend. The owner says the sector and worm gear are both fine, so we're looking to go home with them if that's case.

Any hints on pulling a sector gear? What sort of gear puller works best? I'm just wondering if we should expect a battle with this thing.. The tractor has been living outside for some time.

Any certain wear we should keep an eye out for?

I tried that a year or so ago before I saw your post for the first time. Obviously it will work, but not for me. I had so much pressure on those bolts, I was afraid I would break the casting. Tried several times over a period of days and gave up. I had very little shimmy anyway. I was just trying to fix potential trouble areas while I had it apart.

BillOH You can sheck the sector gear right in the tractor trun it all the way one way or the other run your little finger along the tooth and see how much groove is in it or clean the grease off good and look at it some get quite bad. It might not come of easily depends how good the tapper splines are. I have had to use a 16Lp slege with the nut reight the end of the shaft so not to damage the shaft and a 3 Lb hammer on the nut. Good lock

Jack the tractor up enough to put pressure on the sector gear then tap the shaft with a hammer on a wood block or use a brass hammer or punch. The shaft will drop right out.

Another way, and easer, take that 16 lb. hammer and rap the shaft a good rap in the middle between the gear case and lower bearing with the front wheels jacked up. The shaft will fall right out. Don't ask me why this works but it does! (By the way this is how us old pros?? do it.)
