The shaft on my H that sticks out of the front that the hand crank attaches to is frozen. The engine is loose. I have stood on a pipe wrench trying to break this loose in both directions and it won't budge. Has anyone ever experienced this??

Gently heat AROUND the shaft as much as possible to expand the metal around it and then tap on it with a hammer. Just be very gentle.

I removed the bolster and turned it upside down.. Even then it was stubborn, I then wire brushed everything. Probably would not have done it that way, but I had the bolster off anyway, for other reasons. I replaced the spring at that time.

I have been thru this exercise quite often... Make sure you replace the grease zerk in the front of the bolster, and underneath the rear portion of the bolster. These zerks grease the starting crank assy. I generally replace the zerks, apply grease thru the zerks, spray penetrating oil on all visible surfaces, and tap the crank rod with a hammer. Usually it takes very little force to get the crank assy loose...

Yes, and I'm one that has a hard time waiting for penetrating oil to work. What I normally do is get on it with penetrating oil of some kind (PB blaster, WD-40, or whatever your favorite) and then get some vibrations going with an air hammer, or if it is a nut or bolt an impact wrench. You need to be a little careful, but usually this will get things going without doing a lot of damage like you can with a hammer.

Just my 2 cents.

Be careful that you don't twist it off and totally hose yourself.

Patience is the key, not brute force. Keep soaking it with penetrating oil. Give it a squirt every day. Rap on the end with a hammer, but don't beat the bejeezus out of it. Eventually it'll budge a little, then you can start trying to work it loose.
