If this motor smokes a little while idling , light blue smoke, is this bad. It starts fine with a shot of either . But needs the either at any thing under 50 degrees. Some one said to just hone cylinders and replace the rings and while at it replace the rod bearings. I works well i just want a fail proof tractor as i am 1/2 mile off the road and want to ensure i dont have issues as the tractor gets older. of all things I had a flat yesterdaY . need to get a spare for the front. Luckily I had already had most of the 8"+ of snow blown already. What would a rebuild cost if I wanted a "new" motor?

Like Allan said, the D-239 is just 4 cylinders of a D-358. Anyone who has been around those older 310 and 358 German engines will tell you that blue smoke and hard starts are normal. The newer 358's (those in the 786, 886, 3088, and 3288) were much better, due to increased compression pistons. We've got an 826 with a 358 that is the same age as your 544. It doesn't start quite as well as our 786 and 3088, but I've done some work that has made it a much better cold starter than it was last winter. A large tank heater will help the most. I've got a 1500 watt heater, but if you can find a 2000 watt, get it. Like Hugh said, injectors. Cost about $300 to rebuild six, but it made a noticable difference. Do you know where the starting position is on the shut-off cable? Trying to start with the cable in the "run" position will make it hard. Also helps to be at exactly quarter-throttle. It's 10 below zero here today, and the 826 will start without ether if plugged in for six hours.

Dave: If you need ether above freezing, you have something not in very good shape, and will probably let you down in the near future. From your description I suspect pump and injectors rather than pistons and sleeves. Although without knowing compression, one cant be sure. That 544 should be starting without any aids in temps as low as 15F. Requiring ether above freezing is not good news. Been there and done that.

Hugh,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that engine a 2/3 German engine? Sounds pretty darned normal to me.

Allan

Allan: You are probably quite right. During my farming years if it came from Europe and had an engine, it was bad news.
