This may sound dumb to some of you guys, but I am working on an old M and was wanting to put some wider tires than the 13.6 x 38"s that are on it. Was just wondering if anyone knows of how wide a wheel can be put on it that will fit. Thanks for any thoughts.

I have SM with 15.5s on 11 inch rims (would not reccomend it though). These tires are 8 ply that nieghbor pulled off 4020 JD in seventys, because they were worn down enough to effect traction. Took tire shop 2 to 3 attempts on each one to mount tires without pinching tubes. After finaly got them mounted they have same air that was put in nearly 30 years ago. If one ever goes flat don't know if anyone can get it off rim. They do get good grip even with well worn bars though.

As others have said, the H/M series used a drop center style rim. The 15.5 tire takes a 14" wide rim. Steel Wheel Ranch sells them and I'm sure that others do also. The 15.5 tire is the same OD as the 13.6. There are some that put the 15.5 on the narrow rim. It works, but tire life and probably traction will suffer.

Chris----- There are 2 things you can do to get into the wider tires and rims. The old M wheels are width restricted and I beleive a 12 inch rim is the bigest that was made. You can get
knock offs that are wider or have someone widen them, but that is pricy. I got farmall 400 wheels. They fit right on the axel and you can then use the rims and tires from newer IH tractors. I have run both 18.4 & 16.9 tires on my M. The second option is to get MH 44 hubs.
They fit the M axel and then you can use the 9 bolt, tin rims and they are available in both 34 & 38 inch sizes and a larger variety of widths. Good luck.

Chris: There are M and SM around with 15.5x38, to do that you would need wider rims. Not sure how easy it is to get wider rims for the older M type wheel. Diameter of 15.5x38 is actually not much greater than 13.6x38. I ran the two side by side as duals on a 560 for a spell. Parked on a level floor all tires would touch with 12 psi air.

I think you will find that 14.6x38 is actually larger diameter than 15.5x38. It could be also different profile tire I saw. 14.6x38 is not very common in these parts anyhow. I can tell you the 16.9x38 is quite a bit larger diameter, they will really put a damper on your hp.

13.6's will fit an 11 inch rim. The next size up is 14.9. Anything bigger requires a wider rim, probably best if the 14.9's are on at least a 12 inch rim, I don't know. Remember if you get much wider, you are significantly affecting the ground speed, which may result in less effective HP for pulling tillage implements. If you are talking about tractor pulls, I'm not the one to answer.

What size tire originally came with the M back in the day?

Usually 12-38 (13.6-38) with an option of 12-38 (14.9-38)

A wider tire in some cases will be slower, and in some cases faster.

Which could result in more effective h.p. for pulling implements of husbandry.

A "M" looks nice with 14.9 X 38's on her.

I meant that "usually" a wider tire is taller, which will increase ground speed, probably decreasing pulling power, since the engine has a larger tire to turn. The kids with 33 inchers on their 4x4's get around that by changing the rear rear axle ratio, hard to do on a tractor. Not saying that's always the case though. Conversely a wider tire, within reason, should result in more traction, thus more effective HP. Thus a 14.9 may be fine on an M, but perhaps not on an H. I'm getting into this more than I have knowledge or experience with, so will shut up.

You can buy rims and weld the bars on them. I have a 460 with 15.5's on it, and the rims attach a different way than on the M. Someone else who has done that needs to tell you what will work.

You can go almost any width you want as long as you have the drop center to fit the wheel. I am going to put 14" rims on my SM for 15.5X38. Have fun Boyd

Chris,
The earlier style wheels and rims (H/SH/M/SM tractors) are called Deep Well rims and you might want to ask if they have the drive lug on them so it won't spin on the wheel if it isn't clamped tight enough. The later style wheels/rims (number series tractors on up) are called double bevel. The don't interchange. I think Steel Wheel Ranch (and I'm sure others) offers wider versions of both rims.
