Who has rebuilt a touch control block on a sa?

Ive read the book and have the kit. The dealer said he would do it for 60$ a hr. Ive heard nightmares about dealers and hydraulics. Thinking about doing it myself. Any tips, hints, help, thoughts,(prayers)? Sure looks complicated. It appears to be leaking from where the boots were, on the rockshaft end. I will check all the simple places first but dont hold out much hope for an easy fix.

Thanks for your help,

scott#2

Does your kit contain just the gaskets and o-rings? I helped my uncle rebuild the touch-control on his 140 last winter. After replacing every ring and gasket, found out the valves were worn enough to cause problems. There are supposed to be pointed ends on them. If they have become rounded, this will affect performance.

Yes just the orings and gaskets. Ill have to check the valves as you mentioned. What problems do they cause? Did you replace them? If so how much$ were they?

To MN SCOTT, I wouldnt boil the block. There are some tight tolerences in there and fine finishes on the bores that orings ride in. Use fresh new solvent and treat all disassembly/assembly like a surgical operation.

One thing that is stated again and again in the answers I received was CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN.

I believe they were 6 or 7 dollars each for 4 valves. If they have become rounded they do no seat properly and can allow fluid to pass.

I just did this job this past summer, and here's a few "observations". First, and most important, the control rods that connect to the levers (the ones that actually run thru the smaller boots) MUST be inserted from the "boot" side of the block. Although it seems to fit from either side, inserting them from the "head" side will nick the o-rings and they WILL leak. Its actually in the manual, but not very obvious. When I took mine apart, I was lucky enough to have a digital camera and took lots of pics to be sure to get it back together correctly. Even then, I got confused at times. Clean is the word on this job. Take your time ...

T.

I have a Super C thats going to need a kit to. I was kicking around the idea of having the control block boiled out at a machine shop. Has any one done this or is it a bad idea?

The big thing is CLEAN. Also be sure to lubricate all the orings, etc with HYTRAN as you reassemble.
You can view the IH Blue Ribbon manual at the link below. It covers Cub, Super A, and Super C.

Its not that bad, just take your time and lay everything out as you tear it down. The hardest part I've had is cleaning the gasket off between the cover and the block. The control valves also have o-rings, so you might as well do it all at once. The repair kit at one time had a parts brake down included. Good luck!!!

scott, As Gene has stated, it is easier to do with unit off of the tractor. Yes there are a lot of parts in there, but when you take the front cover off, make yourself a sketch of all the bores looking at the front of the unit. After doing this, get a bunch of plastic bags and number them to correspond with each bore. Your touch control manual, $7.95 from Binder Books, will show the sequence of how the parts go into the bores. This will really help you when you want to reassemble your unit. Hope this helps.

If thats all thats wrong no big deal on fixing. Will be easier if you take whole unit off tractor but there is an O-RING on the end take off the boots and remove the pins and the piston will slide right out and replace the o-ring. Have done it on the tractor but sure is easier with unit off.

Scott,

I intend to do this same thing later this year. If you do undertake the repair, I would appreciate any tips that you learn as you go through the process.

Thanks.

I'm looking at the same repair myself sometime in the near future. Please tell us about your experience after you rebuild your unit. It sounds as if we all got good advice from those responding to this thread, good luck. Greg

Thanks for all the advice, I will probably get into it tomorrow. Ya I am a big fan of sketches, baggies and pictures too. I just dont want to redo it and wind up with a unit that doesnt work or worse, a new problem that needs to be tracked down. Will post back. Here goes nothing.
