To clear up some of the confusion over the various millionth IH built tractors, here’s a quick guide to a few of the major ones I have proof of.

The 1 millionth Farmall series tractor was made in 1947. The count for this tractor includes all of the various Farmall series tractors made (Regular, F-20, F-12, A-B-H, ect).

The Farmall factory built its 1 millionth tractor in April 1951. The count for this tractor was comprised of ONLY the tractors built at the Farmall plant. ERTL made a toy of this tractor. IH made Farmall tractors in more than 1 factory. (Rock Island, Louisville, Ky. And Chicago)

The 3 millionth IH made tractor is a 300 utility sn# 501.

The 4 millionth IH made tractor is believed to be a 806 built in 1964 or 1965.

The 5 millionth IH made tractor is a 1066 built in 1974.

The Farmall plant built its 2 millionth tractor on Dec 5, 1978. This was a 1086.

Lousville built its 1 millionth tractor on 1-10-1969. This was a 3444 TLB that was sold to the state of Kentucky.

May I suggest that you add this to the Articles under Research on this page?

Does anyone know the S.N. of the millionth tractor. It was mentioned earlier that it was an M. Are they accurate on that?

Ken: Do you have any thoughts where in production the 1st and 2nd millionth IH tractors would have come. I'm thinking the 2 million IH mark would have occured near the same time as the 1 millionth Farmall. It would be reasonable the the 1 million IH mark occured sometime in the later half of the 1930s. Would you be so kind as to give us your thoughts.

While we are on the subject, Are there any Case/International/Farmalls made in the USA anymore? I have seen the small Farmalls that has been reintroducted in the U.S., but are they made in the U.S.? Boy, did Case made a mistake when they took the International and Farmall out of the market place. But there are many "Big Red" Agri. boys still around. Go Farmalls!

The CIH Farmalls are assembled in the US from imported parts.

Ken, thanks for clearing that up. The article I quoted did say that one million Farmalls were produced at the Farmall Plant, but made no mention that the one millionth tractor was actually produced earlier, as the article was strictly about the Farmall plant. The article says "For it was in April, back in 1926, that the original Farmall, the world's first successful all purpose, all crop tractor, was built at the same plant, then called the Tri-City Works.--(next paragraph)--It took 25 years, many millions of dollars, and the concentrated, combined efforts of thousands of Harvester employees to build the one-millionth Farmall tractor--". It did not note that the 1st Farmall (Regular) was built somewhere else. Thus the confusion. We need to frame your post and put it on top of everyones computer.--And put three of them on Hugh McKay's!!

CNKS: I guess likely it took Hugh MacKay to bring relatiave facts on this matter to a head. For much too long you guys have been comparing apples to oranges so to speak. We now have the 1 millionth Farmall, the 1 millionth Farmall built at the Farmall plant. We have the 3 millionth IH, 4 millionth IH and a 5 millionth IH. But still no 1 millionth IH and no 2 millionth IH. How in Sam Hill did we get to 3, 4 and 5 million without passing 1 and 2 million.

I don't know if any of it is important. IH chose to highlight the 1,000,000 at the Farmall plant, and the 5,000,000 International, they could have just as easily picked the 3 or 4 million one. It's all about publicity which they hoped would result in more sales, they are just tractors. Sort of like the over-hyped white Farmalls, and some of the gold demos.

CNKS: That's fine if you want to discuss the HYPE of IH. We could probably have a 100 discussions on all the promotional programs IH held over the years, and those discussions are fine.

My argument in all of this has been proper statistics. You cant go on counting one item in 1947, then quite another item in 1974 and have a comparison. I think both Guy and Ken have done a excellent job of laying out figures they have at hand.

Misquoting someone is very dangerous in my opinion. I've always said every man has the right to make himself look stupid or smart. He doesn't have the right to make others look stupid. So if your going to quote someone, you best write it out exactly as he said it.

One of the common misquotes we see is Farmall WD6, IH never called WD6 a Farmall. Take Harley for example, he is so discusted with this subject, he could probably bite off a spike. His only problem, one little clause left out. Sure he had the 1 millionth Farmall in April 51, but he didn't include (at the Farmall plant).

For the most part we are not a bunch of professional writers, just a bunch of good old farm boys getting together for a discussion. Every once in awhile we see someone get critical about grammar, spelling, etc. Those things don't matter, as long as the working language conveys the message intended. I'm not lecturing you Charles in this. Just wanting to point out to everyone how very important it is to quote someone exactly.

Re: IH Millionth Tractors MORE!...... in reply to CNKS, 01-10-2005 11:52:30
I hope that this helps clear up any doubts that IH did make many, many tractors. (5 million plus in fact) IH counted both wheel and crawler tractors when making thier total tractor production "list".

Someday, all of the 50K, 100K, 500K and X Millionth tractors will be listed in a chart/story for everyone to absorb. This kind of research takes time and a few $$ to do.....
