I am painting a Farmall C. The fan and fan shroud are red. But what color are the radiator fins, the top tank on the radiator and the frame around the radiator? I assume the entire radiator was black from the factory. What about the starter and generator from the factory? Thank you.

Starter and generator were red from the factory. I am not sure about the radiator, it sort of depends on whether IH painted the tractor with the radiator installed or not. If installed it was likely red, assuming that they got radiators from an outside supplier, who may have already painted them black. I don't think it matters much. I paint mine red, so that I don't have to mess with another color paint. I don't paint the fins for fear I'll plug them. However, I have heard that black disipates(sp) heat better.

CNKS, I have seen both red and black radiators, and my thoughts are the same as yours in that if they were mounted on the tractor before it went through the paint process than they were painted red with the rest of the tractor, but some may have been mounted after the rest of the tractor was painted and left black as they came from the radiator plant of source. I thought I"d be cute and paint the radiator of my 40 A black, and had a bang up paint job on it only to discover that it wasnt as good an idea as I thought since if the hood and grill do not butt up against each other exactly, it leaves a black background which is very visable after the hood and grill are mounted. I ended up removing the radiator and masking most of it off and painting the mounting surfaces red. Next time, I"ll simply mask off the fins and paint the entire radiator red and not try to create a problem. As to painting the fins, someone told me that a very thin mixture of flat black (almost ink consistency) would make the fins more eye appealing without compromising the effectiveness or function of the fins.

The thin black paint may well be ok, but will probably easily wear off, because you really can't prepare the surface for good adhesion.

I know the car wreckers around here paint the used rads they sell a nice flat black, watched them doing it one day. Not sure how it would affect the fins but would think it would affect the cooling they do if covered by paint. Think it would have to be a thin coat.
