Hello,
I could use some advice from you guys that have been there and done that !
I have about 10 acres of fields , 1/2 of it I use for pasture for cattle the other 1/2 I am going to plant in Hay this spring.
Last fall I had a excavator come in and remove all the sod, stumps and rocks from the 5 acres that will be a hay field.I have put down lime and manure and will seed just as soon as I can this spring .
I need a tractor to plow ,disc, spread manure, mow, rake and bail hay on these 5 acres I can only afford one tractor ,I will probably have to hire somebody to bale the hay the first year or two untill I can afford the equipment but would like to do as much as possible by myself.
What tractor should I look for ?? I only have about $3000. to work with .
Thanks for your time,
Joe

A couple of H Farmalls would do everything you could want and for less than $1,000 each if you look around.

An H will pull a NH 9 ft haybine like a 479 or a 461 (8 ft 6 in) if you're lucky enough to find one in good shape.

Or a pull sickle, rake and hay baler you can be in business for less than $3,000.

I custom baled 15,000 bales several years with old wore out $100 mower, $700 rake and $500 baler. Funny the rake is the most expensive.

Stay away from the three point junk and keep more money in your pocket.

I still don't have a three point tractor and don't need one on 600 acres with 100 cows and 300 acres of hay.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have been taking in all the comments .
I like the H because they go for pretty cheap like you said ....
I thought everybody wanted a Three point so was thinking a little newer maybe a 300/350
I guess I'll have to see what I can find in that size /pricec range

I would go with a 300 farmall fasthitch and power steering if I could get it..I also would go with a new holand baler you can get # 68 to #273 for a little money and they take most of the same parts as the newer ones ,just dont buy a paint job, 300 utilitys were great but they all have problems wiyh the nonpower steering box..(weakest link)

Are you at all mechanically inclined ? If so, go with a 300 or a 350. I have an H (and a C) to take care of about 10 acres of vegetables and 20 acres or beans and small grains. The live hydraulics and PTO would be convenient sometimes, but a second tractor is handier...

Just my two cents - even though you've only got 10 acres - you want to do some tasks that modern conveniences of live hydraulics and live pto would be a blessing - therefore i'd have to say something like a IH 300 utility would be perfect. If it were me, i'd probably like to have a 656 farmall. It might be a little big - but would handle every task you want to throw at it and they are alot of tractor for the money.

joe, here's my idea. 5 acres notwithstanding, i wouldn't settle for anything like a farmall c or ford naa. you might as well have a farmall 300 or better, with independent pto plus live hydraulics to run a haybine or spreader tailgate. i have 2 560's, gas and diesel, both with live hydraulics, independent pto and fast hitch, and neither one cost $3000. so its doable on your budget. a 300 should cost even less. another thing, my dad had both a farmall 300 and international 300 utility when i was growing up. if we wanted to get stuck easy, take the utility. my brother and i called it the traction master. even the super c would go places the utility wouldn't go. the utility steering box was another trouble spot, with it carrying a loader. fwiw. i know there's a bunch of guys here that love their 300 utilities. they are handy, but i think there are better choices. a little more power and features than you need is certainly better than settling for just enough, when its in the budget.

Thanks all for your comments..... .I have seen a couple of nice Super A tractors . Would that be enough tractor? or is that too small. Is the C better suited for what I need ?
I'm thinking that smaller is better ? I have looked at a 560 ,460,450 and thought they were too large for 5 acres?

You didn't say if was flat ground, gentle rolling land or steep sidehills. That would be a big factor also. On the hills, the more power and weight that you have the better. If it is all flat with no hills to climb around on, the 300/350 row crop would be the perfect machine. If you have some hills, go for the 450 or bigger and weight her down. Nothing like takeing the "E" ticket ride down a hill with a loaded hay rack. Been there, done that..... ..

The land is flat ,I am reclaming an old hayfield that the previous owners planted in Christmas trees 50 years ago.
They let them grow and never harvested them .
I cut them down for lumber and brush for wreaths.
Finally got around to getting it stumped last year
Can't wait to plant it this spring !

Joe if you can find a good 460 Diesel, it will do every thing you want to do with ease. They are very easy on fuel mine will only use about 2 1/4 gal per hr. under full load will pull left and right new holand rakes on 1/2 gal an hr at about 100 rpm in 4 th.

I would get a M farmall tractor cause it has lots of power yet is still easy to work on. My dad has his grandpa's and it runs like a new one. They are good all round tractors especially with three point hitch. good luck with you hay feild this coming year

Well I'm sure a Ford will do the job but you can get a pretty nice Farmall Super C for under $2000( probably more like $1400 ) which in my opinion is more tractor for the money.A Ford in equal condition will cost twice as much ( of course you may get lucky ).With only 5 acres to deal with I assume your looking at a small baler and my experience is that the C will handle the job just fine.

300U's to the rescue! lol
Weight in the back for sure, and hopefully p/s.

I'm surprised IH didnt sell a million of them...I guess the 50's buyers werent as keen on "utility" as everybody seems today.

To be perfectly fair to Cowman and Ford (not an N series, their too light) is pretty comparable to the 300U. I would look around and see which you can get the best service for. It may be an ugliver er Oliver or one of those orange things. The best tractor made is worthless if you can't get parts or service. What are your neighbors working in thier fields? Follow their lead. If nothing else they can offer advice on your simmilar tractor or a shoulder to cry on when needed.

Joe,

I agree with Slo. That's why they called 'em "Utility" tractors, 'cause they can pretty much 'do it all' for the small-acreage guy.

Yesterday, I looked at a 656U and while it would serve your purposes quite well, I really think that even this "modest sized" tractor would be overkill for what you want to do.

Allan

300U or 350U with a loader. Live hydrolics and power steering. Did all our farming for years with one(300U). Every one will have their favorite but for all around one tractor work on 10 acres, those two utilities would be tough to beat for the money in my opinion.

That"s what I was thinking too. I"ve only had my 300U for this last season but it has sure impressed me with how well it gets things done. I would like to hear what the diff. is going to a 350 though. Loren

My 300U has an optional live PTO, TA and power steering. I think (but not sure) that these were standard or atleast mostly standard on the 350U.

Be sure to have pleanty of weight in the rear end for loader work.

The 350 isn't another listing in the same series, the x50's are a later series all together? Letter series, x00 series, x50 series, and whatevers after that. You can say it, DUH. LOL
