Another question on sa transmission

I want to change the trans fluid. What can I use to flush the case with to get all the old stuff out that wont harm the seals and gaskets?

Also it looks like there is 2 old crusty corks in the top back of the case. Are these supposed to be vents? Cant find anything in the book on them.

And finally, is there any way to prevent trans fluids from turning colors from moisture... additives?

Thanks,

scott

Drain the old fluid and then put 2 gal diesel or kerosene or one gallon good cleaning solvent in. Then put an airhose in the solution that has a slight leak in the solution and let it bubble for an hour or so then drain again. If you let the solution clear up you can do it again. Another way i do it sometimes is kerosene and go for a drive on a warm day but now is not the season.

Scott, Some guys say to add one quart of automatic transmission fluid and drive around for an hour or so to clean out the transmission. I've never tried it. Their will be a lot of gunk in there but I'd just drain the fluid and refill with 80/90W. Dont forget to change the fluid in the final drives also. You should need two gallons of new fluid total. The corks behind the shift lever plug/protect two threaded holes used to mount the rear cultivators and plow. Regular hard work that heats up the transmission and engine will keep the water contamination to a minimum. Dave.....

Thanks Dave, Do those 2 holes go all the way through? The corks are all but gone and need to be replaced. I dont want to push them into the case if I dont have to.

The holes do not go all the way through. You can replace the corks, or periodically clean out the holes with a tap.

Thanks CNKS. What do you think about flushing the trans case with kero. Ive read all the posts and it looks like a 50/50 chance at getting leaks at the seals. Im really on the fence about this one. Especially since it has run all this time on chocolate milk oil.

I don't like using anything but the recommended lubricant. Cost you 3 times as much, but I would drain the old stuff out, replace with new, run it a while and then replace that. Others can disagree, as I have no proof that kerosene or anything else will or will not hurt anything, I just don't like the idea. If I have the cover off, I just wipe out whatever remains after draining, the refill with new with no flushing. One problem with flushing is that you are going to loosen some but not all of the crud on the walls of the housing, then more is going to break loose later. If I can't clean it thoroughly, I just leave it alone, except for trying to get all the remaining water out. Yes there is a possibility that the seals will leak.

Should have known...aint gonna mess with it. I took the cover off and to my surprise there isn't any sludge in the bottom. For some reason I just have a hard time with that off color gear lube.
