We have a 1066 on our hands that intermittently looses the power steering, clutch and brakes all at the same time. We'll shut the machine off, start it up again and everything works fine.
Something to do with the TA?

Any ideas?

I have not fooled with it yet. Won't be late April until we really use it again...

One thing I can say is that for our 225 acres, we have not yet found anything that tractor WON'T do. The injection pump is set a little too high, and I'm hoping that I can turn it down a little. Just estimating, I think she's spitting out 180 horses. That's a little rough and the tranny, etc.

My email's unblocked, so send me an email. I can go on for a while about the 1066.

Ag,

I agree with the others; you are loosing output oil from that 9 gpm pump for whatever reason.

Since the power steering is the first in line in the food chain for oil, the brakes second and the T/A is last, could be the front pump is trying to go 'feet up' on you.

However, is the tractor making an awful noise when this is going on? Do you loose PTO? Do you loose hitch and remote function as well?

The pressure plate drives this little gizmo, which in turn drives both pumps and the PTO. It is the weak point on the beast too, as it seems to be the main wear point.

Yes the hitch and remotes go too. I was chisel plowing in the spring and couldn't get the plow out of the ground when it happened.

I'm not sure about the PTO. The only PTO application we have for it is the grain cart, and we are always in neutral when unloading.

No, there is not an awful noise. It sounds entirely normal. And then you can't steer, clutch or brake and your heart's in your throat!

Judging from the pictures, I geuss they're making progress on your 966?

Hey Ag,

If you are losing both systems, then there are only two common denominators at play: the supply oil pickup (filter) or the mechanical drive of both pumps.

The only other (way, way outside) possibility is that both pumps are right on the edge of dying (what’s the chances of that? Slim and None?).

I think there is something wacky going on in that filter area. You don’t suppose that the last guy didn’t get things back together quite right when he changed the filter, do you?

I can’t imagine you losing the IPTO input gear and you’re not hearing it. If that thing came unraveled, you’d know it (and so would all of your neighbors). :>) Plus the fact, why should it be okay after you restart the tractor? That wouldn’t make any sense.

Yes, my old tractor is coming along fine. Sure are “money-hungry” aren’t they? :>(

There are several things that can cause this , Like the others have said check the hdy . filter first and also the fluid level. Could be that you are also sucken air between the speed transmission and the range trans. , could be that the suction tube is broken or a hole in it ( i have found this on one tractor and it was not a fun thing to find. ) It could be that the sump check plug is leaking . One of them things that tryen to fix over the key board is tough . Also try and over fill of about two or three gal of hdy fluid . Do you have a loader on this tractor??? Let me know more on this .

No, the tractor does not have a loader.

We purchased it at an auction in November of 03',
and have not yet changed the hydraulic fluid and filter-the previous owner had changed all the fluids and filters right before it went up for auction (and put a reman injection pump that is set up WAY to high...).

The fluid level is good and it is clean- and as I recall there is a slight leak around where the filter cover is but thats just a gasket I think.

If there is a leak there then it is sucking air.The filter is on the suckshion side of both pumps . Also while running the tractor turn the steering wheel all the way and step on the brake and see if it shifts down to low side of the T/A .

agrogers, Try changing the tranny filter. It is on the rh side of the tranny behind the round inspection cover.
Later,
John A

It sounds exactly like the hyd. filter. It sucks the gunk in your tranny over the screen.Get it changed, because running with no oil,you could ruin a pump. Now if it works when cold, and not when tranny is warmed up,it could be a pump.Ive seen that too,but we all hope not.
