Cost to overhaul 666

Anyone have an approximation of what an overhaul costs for a gas 666 if I do the disassembly and reassembly myself? I realize there could be lots of variables, just give me a ball park. I"m wondering what a non-running tractor would be worth.

Thanks,
James Martin

James I would sure use the lo ash oil. Never did readjust the valves after brake in. Should have the rist pin bushings bored rather than honed, that way you hnow they are in line with rod bearing.

James it is the carben build up that burns the valves not the adjustment.

It really depends on what kind of shape the engine is in. If it's just getting kind of tired, you can do it for under $1000. I overhauled a 263 two years ago that needed quite a bit of machining, and still got it done for $1200. Make sure to replace the wrist pins/bushings. Those are the weak spots in that engine. Have the valves ground, and only run Case-IH Low-Ash oil, or you will be giving it another valve job before you know it.

Adjust the valve clearance after 50 hours and then yearly and forget the low ash oil. The neighbors 560 would need a valve job every year and I adjusted ours and never did a valve job.

I disagree. Like Aces said, it's the carbon build-up that causes burning, not the adjustment. Once you get that build-up from non- Case-IH Low-Ash oil on the valve seats, they will not transfer the heat from the valves to the head. Guys who run non low-ash oil also have problems with spark plugs. We've been running low-ash in this 706 for 32 years now, not one burned valve, and belive me, they don't get adjusted as often as they should. Who cares if the low-ash costs a little more, beats doing valve jobs every 100 hours.

This site won't let me name my source, but a catalog I have lists piston and sleeve sets for about $620. Add to that head work, and crank work (if needed) plus gaskets and seals, etc. Some one else will have to give you what the thing is worth--in non-runing condition, all I can say is not much.

depending on were you buy your kit, with out looking between 6-850 bucks, if the crank needs to b turned it could become another 500 bucks on mach work, added cost complete gasket set , front and rear seals, the cond of head on how much it needs so just my guess you could get by on say 700 bucks but could spend 13-1500 depending on cond of crank, block, and head
