Greetings, my super M has a broken tempature gauge line, I would like to shorten the line by about 1/8 of an inch and solder it back in, my question is what gas is inside of the probe, and do all gases expand at the same rate? thanks in advance
jack

I wonder if its mercury. That rises when temperature goes up.Its also a heavy metal and very toxic.

It's NOT mercury! Primarily because mercury is VERY expensive, and secondarily because it's toxic, and it doesn't work too well in this type of gage anyway (it's vapor pressure is too low...)

Depending on the mfr and the temperature range a capillary type (mechanical) temp gage bulb will be partially filled with a high vapor pressure/low freezing point liquid - typically alcohol, ether, ammonia, butane, etc. I suspect new ones use a non-flammable refrigerant like R11, R12, R134A or similar as a working fluid, though of this I am not certain.

It won't hurt to try, let us know how it works out. Check the calibration with boiling water. The needle went to the upper end of the 'Run' range on a new gauge for my H. The local dealer nicked me for $25.

No idea what gas is in the sensing tube. Then we also don't know how much is in there or what pressure it should be at what temperature. All of these things determine the range of the gauge and how it reacts/responds at different temperatures. We just put one on my brother's SM last summer. I don't remember what I paid for it but it was probably in the $10-15 range. It was brand new and I was able to pick it up at the Case/IH dealer. My question would be: Why would you even want to try? Just my $0.02.

I broke a temp. gauge probe when I was a kid. It had liouid in it. Smelled like alcohol, but I'm not sure what it was. ken
