Not familiar with how the 300/350U combo meter works other than the tach is cable driven....question is...how does the hourmeter work? Does that drive off the tach or is that electric? If 6V Pos electric, how would one hook it up to 12V Neg?
Mine has been disconnected and the former cable drive fitting on the distributor base was seemingly broken off and a makeshift plate screwed in to cover the damage.Hopefully I will have a used base coming, and will eventually reconnect the unit.

The whole thing is driven by cable from the distributor. The hour counter really isn't very accurate at low speeds.

It's perfectly accurate to count ENGINE HOURS. One engine hour is one hour of time with the engine running at rated PTO speed. When the engine runs at less than PTO speed, that means the "hours" are longer than 1 hour.

Notice the tractors with electric hour meters say "operating hours" and the mechanical ones say "engine hours."

That's what I meant. It takes a certain number of revolutions of the tach cable to put one hour on the guage. It will take longer than one hour of time on a stopwatch to put one hour on the guage with the engine running at say 500 RPM. With the engine running at rated speed, it will take one hour of time on a stopwatch to put one hour on the guage. I was just trying to explain to Paul how these mechanical driven hourmeters work, to understand that, you must accept the fact that they are not an accurate way of measuring the actual amount of hours the engine has run unless it is at rated speed. Got it Novel Idea Guy?

Of course another way would be to record total engine revolutions...but that would get downright scary, plus they couldnt put that many numbers on a dial!

Thats good news.So a new cable and drive mechanism should get it working again.Funny thing, there is no cable or drive, yet the needle will occasionally jump when its running. It might be a slight vibration causing it,but as it runs very smoothly...it sorta caught me by surprise!

I dont get the hourmeter at all....its at zero. The thing is 50 years old and it has zero hours? Maybe its reset itself all the back to zero from 9999.9???? lol

The Y2K computer Virus got it, those engineers in the 50's never worried about that stuff back then. ;)
