Found this Tractor at the IH dealer. They want $5500 CAN Dollars for it, if you click the link and go to the pic it says what its all got. Since its a diesel, not sure what shape the engines in, but are they as expensive to fix as an MD? What about the price, never tried to buy one of these before, so i dont know what they go for. I would really like it.

That seem's a bit high but I suppose it is where you are that can make a big difference. Right now I have a really nice 560 LP for sale in west Texas for $3,500. These tough little tractors used to be thick out here on the High Plains and I still know where there are at least four within thirty miles of here.

I have had trouble trying to get 2G's for a F460D with good tin and poor TA. I bought an I806D for 1700, but had to put on a set of rear wheels plus about 1000 labor. Also bought a 986 for 2500 but had to put in sleeves and poistons, then the TA went. These old tractors are a bottmless pit but when your done, they feel so damn good to drive when everything works better than they did new.

Mitch: Too much money. You should be able to find a good 656, 706 or 756 with 3 point for $5,500. I think Allan is a bit high on the new price, way back when. I didn't do the buying on my 560, but I don't think my dad paid $4,000. I know my 656 was only $4,200. new. My 560 was equiped same as that one except I had 2 remotes besides the fast hitch control valve. My 656 was wide front, 2 remotes and 3 point.

Believe me though, Allan is right on the money if you have to start engine rebuild. You could quite easily have a $10,000. or $12,000. tractor. Without 3 point in 2005 that is a lot of money. When my 560 blew it's engine, IH dealer was going to sell me a short block, that is complete with crank, rods, pistons and sleeves, for $4,000. Other than engine my tractor was in excellent condition. That was 1978 and I couldn't see spending that kind of dollars on a tractor without 3 point. Dealer even offered me a used 766, no cab, for about $10,000. These were all diesels.

Hi Hugh,

You sure about that $4200 656? New? Diesel?

We traded for a brand new 656D in '69. Seems to me it was crowding the $6300 mark.

'Course those prices back then would vary with the salesman you talked to. Bought a new 966 in '72 for $10K cash, no trade. Four years later, they were bringin' almost $17K. Go figure.

Allan

Allan: During the 1950s, 60s and 70s I had a relative farming in New England. Much older man than I, and now deceased. We quite regularly compared notes. If one used a common dollar there was no rhyme nor reason to pricing used in Canada versus the US. It was not only IH either, all companies were doing the same. There was no formula to it either. What was the status quo one year was not necessarily so the next year.

I THINK IT'S CALLED, WHATEVER THE TRAFFIC WILL BEAR.

For well over a decade now, here in Canada, you could have a new 125 hp Deere in your yard, and by new I mean a new one every 3 years, for very little more than a 1066 would have cost you in 1975. You can't buy the tractor, and when the lease is up a US truck picks up the tractor. I say for well over a decade, but the strength of the Canadian dollar seems to be putting and end to this. In the 1990s Deere dealers had no used inventory, all of a sudden they do.

We used to be able to buy a 3 year old Pontiac Grand Prix, coming off lease for $16,000. CAD. Since your dollar started tumbling, we can now buy that same car for $11,000.CAD. For close to 15 years now, used 3/4 ton 4x4 trucks were non existant here in Canada. In the past year, there is all kinds of them.

If I remember my history books right, the early '70s were a time of extremely high inflation rates. Arab Oil Embargo and all... Gas prices go up, the price of EVERYTHING goes up, except for the stuff farmers sell.

I think that i would take a ride on down below the boarder and find one and sneek it back across last 560 D wide ft. that i got out of Indinia cost me 1950 buck US and all it needed was a valve cover gskt and a starter rebuild.

FK,

I really don't look at the asking price that much, but rather try to think ahead, down the road, to the money I'm gonna have in the thing after all the dust has settled and I put 'em back into new condition.

I try to keep 'em at or below the new selling price if at all possible, because not even figuring in the cost of inflation, I feel these old tractors give you one heck of a bang for the buck using today's money.

Just ask that dealer what a brand spankin' new 55-horse tractor will cost you.

So looking at a worst-case scenario, you have a new T/A, clutch and batteries. But the down side is that the tractor, more than likely, will need an engine, tires and a paint job at the very least. All of a sudden, that $5500 tractor becomes a $10,700 tractor.

Now, what is 42 years of inflation worth, would you think? The tractor originally sold new for $5500 American.

The dealer has $2500 in that unit and he wants to double his money back out (normal operating procedure).

But forget that for a minute; the bottom line is that it is your call and your decision as to how much you want to drop on your favorite tractor.

If you want and if you are able to pour the money into it (and make no mistake; you will), go buy 'er. Only you know what that tractor is worth to you.

Just the way I do it,

Allan

Ya know, I'm gonna have to weigh in with you on this one....I bought a '54 SC Case about 6 months ago for $1000.00. It came with a new set of tire chains, and a Case eagle hitch mounted blade. I thought (and still do)I got a good deal. Now I have nearly $3400.00 into it and still need new tires. I put on a wide front, new torsion seat spring, exhaust elbow, ring gear, rebuilt starter, lights, hydraulic hoses, machining costs, piston rings, gaskets, gauges, brakes, pulley parts, etc, etc.... And it was a running/operating tractor when I bought it. So when I see small tractors for sale for under $2,000.00 I double it and figure I might be in the ball park. If that 560 is in turn key condition, complete and not needing ANY significant repairs it is a fair price. But I doubt if that is the case. Glenn

Hi Glenn,

Well, let's be honest and face the piper; this "sport" of ours is, at best, a money black hole. But darnit! We enjoy ourselves to no end and compared to these folks running around tryin’ to be ‘cowboys’, heck! Our toys are dirt cheap!

I've got this crazy goose-egged idea that I wanna go out and farm again. So, when I see a feller buy an absolute pristine 1066 and plop down $15K to $17K, I don't think he is crazy at all; looks to me like he is using his head.

It is these new $60K and $80K tractors that give me gas. How can they get that kinda money for a darned tractor, anyway? :>)

Allan
