My 756 suddenly lost power and developed a solid knock in the bottom end.I haven"t pulled the pan off for an inspection yet but was just wondering if anyone had any ideas what I might find when I do? If this engine is trashed is there a different or better engine that I could swap in without a whole lot of trouble?

Rebuild the 310. Glow plug engines suck!!!! There are plenty of parts for the 310. The german diesels rule!!!

Willing to bet its a spun rod bearing. Seems to be the only weak spot in the 310. I've seen several with spun rod bearings and its usally no. 6 that goes. If I were you I would rebuild it as the other engine options listed by other posters are inferior to the 310, not worth the time to put them in. My 2 cents.

don't even consider swapping for a different size engine. If you've had a german 310 anything else would seem uncivilized

You ain't seen a 756 with a D360 in it, then... Once you go wet sleeve, you never look back :)

The German diesels are wet sleeved.

Never good when you suddenly lose power and develop a knock. If your crankshaft and block are still good, rebuild it. Nothing else that fits beats the 310. A 358 is the only thing better, and it would bolt in, but good luck finding one. You could go to a gas or a glowplug diesel pretty easy, lots of 706's out there that you could get the engine and frame rails from, but the German engine is much more heavy-duty than that design.

One or two things has happened , one ya had a piston start to sezze or a bearing is going south for the winter , Now as for just swappen out and engine well a 221 thru 301 gasser will fit or ya can put a 282 D in it or the best money is fix what ya have then ya know what ya got and do it wright the first time it only cost a dollar more to go first class and it should outlast you.
