What size are the bolts and what is the thread for the holes in the side of the bell housing on a '53 Super A? Also, are the holes blind or do they go straight through? Thanks, SAm in NS

If you are mean the ones in the sides to mount attachments they are standard coarse thread,
either 5/8" or 3/4" can't remember. Stick a screwdriver in and see if they are blind or not.

Looking at my parts manual, and not going and looking at my tractor for to verify, AND assuming you mean the bolts that attach it to the engine block: two 1/2-13NC x 1 1/2's, four 1/2-13NC x 1 3/4's. There are also four 2 1/2" others for the housing (I'm not sure what those are). I believe (diagram is not comletely clear to me) that the two 1 1/2's go through the flange on the housing into the block, and the four 1 3/4's go through the flange on the block into the housing. It appears that all are blind. If I go look at my tractor, it's probably make a liar out of me. The other 4 bolts mentioned above may attach the torque tube to the transmission case, as the listing for the transmission case doesn't list any bolts. Those are probably blind, to prevent any oil from leaking around them.

From early experience (and grief) one point. Chase the threads with a good tap prior to bolting. IH either by intention, or worn taps, often has near round thread roots/crests on the tapped holes in castings. Paint is also an issue in holes exposed to factory paint. 2cnts.
