Can someone(bodies) tell me - one who is not a mechanic - why my 240U is slow in turning over. Haven"t had it running in over a month and we are expecting 5-10 inches of the white stuff. Will probably rely on the "45 2N w/front blade for plowing. Thanks in advance.

I am definitely not a mechanic, so I guess I'll take a crack at your question. I am not very knowledgeable about 240s, but there are a few basics that apply to just about any tractor. Scenario 1: your starter could be weak. Have it rebuilt or looked at by a shop to test it. Scenario 2: the cables could have excessive resistance. Check their external condition, check the pressed on ends for corrosion. Scenario 3: theere could be weak connections on the battery or the starter. Clean off any corrosion and reattach. Scenario 4: Poor ground. Check the condition of the ground cable, clean its contact with the chassis, or test it by attaching it somewhere else on the tractor to see if the condition improves. Scenario 5: Check the battery itself. Long term sitting is never easy on batteries. Check the electrolyte level and its specific gravity. To test it, try attaching a different battery and see how much of a difference it makes. Lastly, what weight oil are you running in it? I know that our International 2500 turns over a little slow in winter with 30 weight oil in it. Going to SAE 10 or 10W-30 can make a big difference. Just make sure to change it back at the end of winter. It could be any of these basic things, but there are other causes that are very difficult to find. Our Farmall M has the same problem, so those are the things I am going to start with. Good luck!

My 240 was slow at cranking over also. I had the starter rebuilt and the same thing, it just would not turn over very fast at all. So I ended up converting it over to 12 volt and it starts now just as soon as you hit the starter button.

Oil too heavy for the season.

Weak battery, or battery too small.

Weak starter.

Dirty, corroded, loose, or undersized battery cables.

Man Bob, that was a fast response. Cleaned battery cable connections. New battery with tractor when I purchased it - about three months ago. Haven"t changed oil yet and this could be the case. I also have a terrible squeal in hydraulic pump and shut tractor down after running for a few second. This was over a month ago. Then weather got cold and I got busy, or was it the other way around??? I have to check fluid level. Is check plug on right or left side of torque tube? Need to get the manual out. Thanks for the response and any other info would help.

If other recommendations don't work, try pulling it off to start it and investigate noise. Possibly hydraulic malfunction. Sqeal could have been relief valve. Pump might be trying to create high pressure from stuck spool somewhere, putting extra load on starter. Shot in the dark.
