Late Model 140 Questions

I have a 1959 Farmall 140 and am considering buying another 140 that is a 1979 model which, I am led to understand, is the late year of 140 production. Questions:
1) The fellow tells me the serial number is 66XXX, but looking at the serial numbers of registered 140s on the YT site the only 1979 140 shown has a 61XXX serial number. Where do I go to find 1979 production serial number information for a 140 (the YT reference site only goes through 1975).
2) I understand there were safety related changes such as the clutch/starter switch interlock. Are there any other significant changes made to the late 1970's 140 Farmalls that make it more difficult or increase the hassle factor?
Appreciate your insights and comments.
Bill

Bill, If that is the 1979 Farmall 100 from the Gent in Sanford, I took a look at it and it looks pretty good although since I wasn't interested, he didn't crank it up. If it's the same one, the guy told me it was a one owner tractor and he bought it from a dealer brand new in the 80's and it didn't look like it had much heavy use. Good luck, Ramon

I used to own a 1976 IH 140. It had the 12 volt system (as I recall, it was a generator, not an alternator), key switch starting with solenoid and a spin on oil filter. The tractor also had a 4 post ROPS on it when I got it, but I think that was an option. I took the ROPS off because it was too high to go in my garage. Sold the ROPS with a Super A I had. The ROPS bolted to the outside of the final drive housing at the drawbar bolt holes. I don't recall for sure if it had a starter interlock, but I think it did.

Bill: While I've never gone modern on the offsets, I believe 140 was changed to 12 volt with an alternator sometime before end of production in 1979. With that came a solenoid and key starting. Very likely they had a safety starting switch on clutch by then. A 4 post ROPS canopy was also available, I think manditory in some states and provinces. I know in my home province of NS, all new tractors sold had to hsve ROPS at some point. I do forget the exact date, but late 70s would be close.

Hugh,
Thanks for the information. Was 1979 the last year for the 140?
Say you"re from Nova Scotia? My wife"s family originates from your neck of the woods. Her paternal grandfather grew up in NS. The family names are Thomson and McKeen.

Bill: Yes, 1979 was the last production year for the 140. After 40 years of much the same tractor with some improvments, IH ended it. What they replaced it with, you don't want to know about. I have two friends that bought new 274s, they no longer have them. One guy has a SA and the other a 130.

The name McKeen was quite common in my home town of Middle Musquodoboit. However if you put McKeen and Thomson together that sounds like Pictou County. Most likely one of the towns of New Glasgow, Westville, Stellarton, Trenton or Pictou.

Bill: I was only off by 30 miles. I still see 9 Thomson names and only one McKeen in the Truro phone directory. That rather surprised me, so I turned to New Glasgow pages, numbers are about the same. Gosh, when did all the Thomsons and McKeens leave town.

That quite frankly surprised me as I expected to see about 20 of each name in New Glasgow and about 10 of each in Truro.
