Allen, thanks. neither the lift or remotes or ps work so must be common problem. Is this pickup in a servicable area? also noticed that oil reserve regesters overful and no the pump is not screeming. hear no pumping at asll

Hi Gerry,

Is the hydraulic system screamin' at you like it is bypassing? Maybe she's froze or plugged up?

On that model, the front pump runs both the remotes and the steering. The rear pump runs just the hitch.

If the hitch won't move either, then the problem is something that is common to both pumps. Oil pick up, sheared drive key, low oil, etc.

If the hitch works okay, might be a problem here because that rear pump uses the same oil intake as the front pump.

Allan the 656 is not made the way the 06 & 66 series are made. It does not have a rear hitch pump. It has one 17 gpm pump with a 9 gpm steering pump bolted to it. Sometimes the gasket and oring between the pumps will blow and cause this problem.

Hi RAS,

Sure don't wanna start an argument that's for sure and I probably used the wrong term. I should have said “piggyback pump” instead of “rear pump”.

But all in all, the 544, 656, 666, 686, Hydro 70 and Hydro 86 all used the same basic hydraulic system with a few flow-rate variants and differing pump manufactures thrown in over the years.

In the 656, as well as these other tractors, the power steering and the auxiliary remotes are handled by the front main pump with a priority flow of 3.5 gallons going to the steering. The "piggyback" pump is the "hitch" pump.

Tractors shipped without a hydraulic hitch just had a plate bolted to the main pump in place of that piggyback pump.

Had a similar problem with my first 656, waited for a warmer day, changed the filter ( oval one below your right foot when seated), topped of the fluid and it worked fine.
