Farmall 300 transmission (picture included)

Hi,

I recently purchased a 300 which was not running, after getting it running I found that it had a ticking noise in the transmission. After taking the top deck off the rear end it appears that one of the gears is chipped on the driving gear for second gear. This gear also runs the idler that drives reverse. The chip is approximately 2/3 to 3/4 of one tooth. I will need to split the tractor to repair. I am probably going to do this however I wanted to get some opinions. Will this chipped tooth cause me problems if I leave it as is? The heavest work the tractor will do will likely pull hay wagons or gravity wagons of ear corn but will also be used for raking hay and other light tasks. This gear is used for reverse and 2nd gear however it always meshes with the idler so you can always hear the ticking (not real loud but you can hear it if you try. I have a picture that I am attaching if I can figure out how.

You already have the hard work done ( Clearing the deck).
Might as well get her fixed. Its not that hard at all. if its a top gear it will be just cake. Bottom gear is more work but can still do easy.
Once you get the gears out check them out, you may have to replace more than one.
Put a add for gears on this site in the classifieds. You will get all kinds of RE's. Lots of 300/400 rears sitting out there. You will get all kinds of prices from $100 gear on down. I got 5 gears for my 400 for $100 total.
A good book to get would be.
IH Blue Ribbon Service manual. Form GSS-1063, Transmision 300 series.

ted: To start with you don't need to split tractor to replace those gears. It is done by removing the crown gear and pinion, then everythig will come out. It has been 35 years since I've done this so I'm not going to try a give you a blow by blow on this. I did both my 300 and 560. I will give you one little piece of advice though, make sure the end of the shift lever gets built up so it just nicely fills the notch on one shifting rail. That shift lever is almost always the cause of these broken teeth. The shift lever comes out of 2nd-3rd rail without taking it from one of those gears. Depending on whether you are shifting up or down, tractor stays in 2nd and goes into 1st, or 3rd to 4th and it stays in 3rd. When you pop the clutch bingo, away go teeth. Of course this always happens when you are shifting quickly.

If you can get an IT manual it will give you the step by step proceedure. I along with a friend did this 35 years ago and believe me it was the blind leading the blind. We must have been good as 300 is still going and the 560 is now a modified puller turning about 300 hp and still going. Believe me we were both amatures, was the first gear box we ever had apart. Just trying to build your confidence. You have the worst part done, getting top off transmission.

Hugh,you have me working my brain to hard.I agree on main shaft removal but can't figure out how you get bottom trans shaft out without splitting clutch or T/A housing from trans.

To DWV and Kelly: As I said earlier, it is 35 years since I did these tractors. On the actual step by step, I just don't remember. I know we did not split either tractor. I do remember the 300 damage being very minor compared to 560, thus we may only have had top shaft out on 300. The 560 had 4 gears to replace, plus a bent shaft. I'm thinking at least one of those gears was from bottom shaft. Again I'm not 100% certain how much we removed.

I was kind of thinking on this too.
Could you remove the PTO seasonal disconnect insp plate.
Push the disconnect forward, Then remove the pto shaft bearing cage bolts.
Then some how move the bearing and the shaft forward enough to allow for the removal of the big nut holding the counter shaft in?
I suppose if that could be done you could some how get the counter shaft to move rearward to allow for gear removal.
That would be no fun!!

Better idea if you couldn't actually split the tractor, would be to use 6 x 8 inch grade 8 bolts in place of the bolts that attach the clutch housing to the transmision. Then split the tractor the lenth of the bolts letting them support the units. That would give enough room to remove the pto shaft. Or atleast get enough room to get at the counter shaft. Maybe.....

From my recall the only power going from TA section to section in your photo on lower shaft is pto power, and that shaft serves only as an idler for transmission, right or wrong? No.2 Tractors motive power goes through the upper hole where shaft has been removed in your photo, right? No.3 5th gear is nothing more than a sliding coupler on the upper shaft, right? No.4 All other gears are transmitted through the gear one can see in your photo, on lower shaft, then back to upper shaft and on to the pinion, right? No.5 The lower transmission shaft is actually hollow thus allowing pto drive shaft to pass through it, right? No.6 Which is the sliding yoke for pto coupling, the one in photo or from the TA section? No.7 What holds the pto shaft shown in your photo in place?

If you could confirm or condem what I'm saying, it may help jog my memory just a bit on exactly what I removed or didn't remove 35 years ago. I realize the 560 is somewhat different as it does not have a seasonal disconnect. However the hydraulic pump is driven from that lower shaft in the TA section. Over the years, I've stored a lot of information in that computer upstairs, sometimes it just takes the right keyword to recover it. I even did this in my sleep last night. As you may notice, by my posting, it even interupted my sleep.

#1 right. #2 right #3 right. #4 correct, the constant mesh gear is always turning the lower shaft. That runs off the input gear thats on the back of the TA.
#5 correct. Thats why I dont think you could remove the gears with out splitting the tractor. Even if you could get the counter shaft out to the rear the pto shaft would still be there clogging up the works. one comes out to the front and the other to the rear and the pto shaft runs inside the counter shaft.
Maybe on a 560 if you remove the hydralic pump and related drive linkage maybe you can remove the pto shaft in the opening??? I havent had my 460 apart yet so dont know.
#6 the one in the photo. #7 Just the front bearing cage. 4 bolts and its loose. It rides a removable yoke at the rear to attach to the pto rear unit. On the 400 any way there is about 1/4 space between the pto shaft and the counter shaft. SO there is some play room to drop it down a smidge.
Dont fret about it Hugh. Just seeing if there is a quicker way into and out of the rear of these things would save alot of time. I know I will be in the rear of one of these again, now that I have done it. Next 300 or 400 at the auction with a bad tranny might be sitting in my shop. Saw one go that ran real good but the tranny was wore out went for $300. Should have got it. had all the goodies on it.

Kelly: Not really fretting a whole lot, just wanted to test my memory. Lot of water has run under the bridge in the past 30 years. I really never had another one apart after that. My 300 wasn't very bad and I'm thinking all we ever replaced was 2nd - 3rd gear on the upper shaft. The damage on 300 occured shifting quickly from 3rd to 4th. I did this myself, shift lever came out of 2nd - 3rd rail without taking it from 3rd and transmission went into 4th. I dropped the clutch and old 300 died quite quickly.

Same thing happened on 560, but with a hired operator. Of course the 282 diesel didn't give up quite so quickly. there were 4 damaged gears plus a bent shaft. Don't think the initial inpact did all the gears. He lined the shift lever up in rails and kept operating. Operating with the bent shaft did some damage. Shift lever had come out before and he knew how get it working again. Had I known this was happening, I would have built up the shift lever. I am trying to contact my helper on this one.

Thanks for the advice guys. Just to clarify, it is one of the lower gears. Kelly's website is helpfully but sme pictures were very slow and others were not viewable (I'll try again later). I had thought that the tractor needed to be split behind the T/A fo that the shafts could be removed from the front. From what you guys are saying I don't need to split it but do need to take the rear end apart and remove the gears from the rear? Does this require removing the PTO? Right now I have the control column Pulled up on a hoist and hanging over the tractor and the deck pulled off the back. I am going to replace the gear while I am in there. I am also going to closely look over the gears that this one meshes with as it seems that it could damage them in due to running this way.
