As previously posted, very likely your tractor was/is a steel wheel model wherein the factory blocked out 5th gear for safety reasons. I would imagine it would be a fairly simple fix if you have a shop manual which should be one of your first purchases to accompany your new tractor. Good luck!

The shift pattern on the H looks like this:
R-2-4
-----
1-3-5
If the shifter won't go into 5th, all the way to the right and pulled back, it could be, as Ray suggested, that the lockout screw is in place. That feature was mostly used for tractors with steel wheels rather than rubber tires.
If the shifter seems to go into the 5th gear position but the tractor doesn't move that's a different problem; either the shifter forks need work or, more likely, the teeth on the 5th gear are gone. This gear is different from the others in that it slides over a splined shaft rather than meshing teeth on the outside of the gear.(Does that make sense?) I think you can at least see if the gear is moving as it should by pulling off the belt pulley, but I wouldn't swear to it.
Good luck, and let us know what you find, ok?
Wm

Yup, you can see fifth when you take the belt pulley off.

Hey Jim, I think all H's have 5 gears but there is a lockout screw for 5th gear. Someone before you could have scewed this in locking your tractor out of fifth. It think the screw is on the floorplate by the shifter, but not sure. I am sure someone else can clarify this. Hope this helps a little.Raya

I should correct that to the pattern on the H and M series Farmalls. The A,B,C, tractors had 4 forward gears plus the reverse

All of the H models have 5 forward gears with 5th being road gear (high speed for use on the road). Plus the reverse gear. This was the gear pattern on all the letter series tractors from Farmall.
