Just bought a 966 and got it home and dropped it off at the shop Yesterday. Nice straight old girl with 4868 hrs showing. The cab has got to go!!! Question is: the steering is very slugish and the TA is not responsive. Does this have a double pickup in the trans housing? This tractor has been sitting for several years now and wonder if the filters or pickup screens have become clogged? The fluid is full and looks pretty clean but maybe will still be milky when I drain it. Should I pull out the PTO unit and go in there and clean everything out or is there some other things to try or look at first? The 3 pt and the pto seem to operate as normal, The brakes are also sluggish. Thanks for any help

Migraine,

After you change the filter and if it still is giving you grief, I'd take a hard look at that front pump.

Steering, TA and brakes operate off that pump with the steering getting the priority. If you have no steering, chances are you have no pump.

As with any new toy start with the fluids and filters , the steering and t/a and brakes all work from the mcv pump and before i would start turning nuts and bolts i would run a pressure check and a flow rate on the mcv . Remember that this is not a new tractor and as anything with age on it things wear out . If the pressure is low before i pulled the pump i would install a new spring kit in the mcv . I like the pressure up around 275 to 290 that is a bit higher then stock but things stay locked up even under high horsepower.
