I bought one of dad's M tractors & the right brake drum was frozen. Got the brake lining apart & loose. Thinking I should take off the brake drum to clean it up to, especially the contact surface. Is the brake lining filings contain asbestos or any hazardous material? The tractor needs painted, should I paint the brake drum, inside of the brake drum housing & etc. I found no seal between the housing the tractor body cassing. Should there be a gasket? I have the tractor manual but it's not much help. How do I pull of the brake drum, is it appears to be stuck if it is recommended to pull off for restoration purposes? Thanks for any input. Den

You may need a puller to remove drum. Penetrating oil and heat will help also. Lay a straight edge across braking surface of drum, if it's worn more than 1/32, have it turned. This will make a big difference in braking.*Don't forget to replace the bull pinion seals that drum runs in.* New seals are thinner than the original ones,so two per side can be used & is recommended. No need to paint anything inside, your choice.

I don't know if the linings have asbestos or not, but frankly, what little asbestos you'll get exposed to isn't going to hurt you. It's years and years of breathing in the asbestos fibers that give you lung cancer. Heck, years and years of breathing in most anything but pure air will give you cancer, and the jury's still out on that one...

Good luck getting the drum off. Does it appear rusted? Is there a set screw?

There's no oil or anything liquid that needs to be held inside the brake compartment, so there's no point in having any gaskets.
