My dad and I are rebuilding a 1256 for pulling ,we just finished the drivetrain and everything is working great except the alternator is not charging. We had the alternator rebuilt and hooked it up the way it was when we got the tractor ,however we never had a chance to see if it charged before we tore the tractor down. The only wires going to the alternator are the two in the dual plug and one going to the large external post and nothing going to the small post.We can get the alternator to charge if we pull the regulator cover push the contacts together .Is the regulator the problem or is the wiring wrong? Also if anyone out there has big lines, injectors ,and a 450 head Roosa for sale let me know.I might be interested in selling our completely rebuilt stock set-up,lines,injectors and pump-works great except I doubt we'll have enough fuel for pulling. The only thing modified in the pump is the leaf spring is cranked down, otherwise completely stock.

The charging system resistor is not an ignition resistor, be shure you have the correct one, they do look alike. Originaly they were red not white. The resistor passes enough voltage to excite (start alternator charging)and then slows backfeed voltage from the alternator to turn the idiot light off.

The alternators on my 56 series tractors have the wires as you described, plus one to the small terminal post ( marked GRD ). That wire must be broken off of the wiring harness at the point where the mesh cable wrapping material ends. Check to see if this is the case. Splice in some new wire, start engine and test for charging. Another thing that prevents charging is a failed resistor. Remove the sheet metal plate just to the left of the park lock lever. Here you will see the voltage regulator. Either just above or below it is the resistor. About 2 inches long ,made of porcelain , should have wires connected to tabs, one on each end. I have replaced several of them over the years. Weldon
