This question has always bothered me: Does the size and length of a pipe affect the sound? Thanks

Yes. The length of the pipe can change the sound and also change how your tractor runs. If you take a straight pipe and cut it too short you will change the pitch of the sound and make it sound more hollow and loud. If you make your pipe long you will deepin the pitch and bring out that true tractor sound that everyone loves at tractor pulls. You also will see a small difference in how your tractor runs with the changes in pipe. Less restistance from exhaust.

I have the chrome 3 inch stright pipe with the curve at the top on my M. With the muffler on, I would get exhaust back in my face. With the curved stright pipe the exhaust goes out to the side. I wear ear plugs when I am mowing, but that tractor sure sounds sweet from across the field.

With a muffler, install the rain cap so it opens to the left and it will keep exhaust away from your face.

You do not want it to short. Longer pipes will decrease the possibility of cracking valves by preventing cold air down there after you shut it down. Also, as you know, a rain cap is needed

Do you still need a rain cap if you never drive it in the rain? Doesn't the rain cap lessen the sound? Or is the rain cap used to keep bird sh!t and stuff like that out? Thanks

I agree that larger diameter deepens the tone, but length of pipe has an effect also. The longer you can get it, like the old straight piped cars, the sweeter the sound. When I was a kid my dad had a Ford flathead V8 running a sawmill with about 20 feet of pipe to carry the exhaust out of the building. I never did get tired of sitting outside where that pipe came through and listening to that flattie sing.

I always thought the bigger the pipe (diameter), the deeper the tone. I don't think length makes much difference, only how much exhaust you want in your face.

And how long you want to be able to hear the tractor. Amazing how quiet they get after a few years.
