Well,I bit the bullet and got a parts store ignition switch and installed it (couldnt use the oem key cover because it wouldnt fit...and I broke it taking it off anyway).Works great now.All lights, and starter cranks everytime. The old 50 year vintage switch was just plain shot.
As for the TA,it now seems to work.I tried a 2nd gear takeoff, and in HIGH range the tires would spin when the clutch is released,in TA LOW the tires dont spin,so its obviously a lower ratio. Its coming together now! The 300U remains alive! (the fast hitch raises and lowers too....1st chance I had to test that out...)

Glad you got that switch taken care of.
But ... "2nd gear takeoff, and in HIGH range the tires would spin when the clutch is released" makes it sound like you're using that pedal like an on/off switch.

They are tough, but keep doing that, and you'd better be studying that service manual for clutch and tranny repair/replacement.

The clutch needs adjustment, and it basically has a hair trigger.I dont make a habit of wheel spinning starts....but as this has a loader attachment, the rear can be rather light at times..especially on loose dirt/sand/mud. However,I am somewhat of the opinion that if a wheel spins, thats taking some of the strain off the trans/differential...as opposed to a wheel thats got perfect traction and loading up on the internals. Its when the traction is suddenly regained (like going from dirt to asphalt)that parts can come apart.

No offense meant. Was just joshing you a bit.
I agree with you that it's gotta slip somewhere and the only two places are the clutch and the ground traction. Had a couple car axles in my life that "slipped", but they only did it once!

We bent an axle shaft once just by a frostheave. And broke a main leaf spring in a pothole.Course these were two GM cars..so that explains some of it.....

I dont know about what the purists would say,but I removed that bulky oil bath air "filter",and replaced it with a neatly made pipe (painted red of course) with a K & N element on top.A photo will follow....

The modified intake filtering system.Engine breather hose is supplied with a fitting on opposite side, and bracket bolts down in stock cylinder head location.

Don't use a K&N on a tractor!! K&N's don't screen all the fine particles. May be ok on a car since they are "supposed" to flow better, but they are not suitable for a tractor, because tractors see more dust. Your precleaner is supposed to screen out a lot of the dust before it goes thru the oil bath. If you insist on a paper filter, get an air cleaner attachment that is designed for a tractor. This will start an argument that I am not going to participate in, but when the auto manufacturers started using paper filters instead of oil bath air cleaners, the "heavy duty" option was an oil bath.

I think this one will work out ok,as its mainly a winter tractor....not a lot of use for it here during the summer (drier) months.

Makes one wonder why large skidders, dozers, loaders, and tractor trailers rely on paper elements (sometimes dual stage) instead of oil bath when their huge diesel engines suck in air at an enormous rate.I would think dozers/wheel loaders would frequent dusty conditions often.....

I know of one construction outfit that insisted in having its dirty paper filters "washed" out and reused. They tried 3 cycles and the paper would turn fibrous and the pleats would warp.
Those were from large excavators, loaders, diesel dumps.

I realize that most everything now is paper, the dual stage probably helps. I imagine the quality has improved since the first paper elements, some of the Walmart types are probably worse. But K&N is not paper, it is some form of washable fabric. I had one in my GMC pickup for several years, until I began reading some automotive forums where there were some rather heated discussions about K&N, mostly detrimental towards it. I think the vehicle did run slightly better with it, but it's easier to put in a new paper one than to clean, dry, and oil the K&N. Tractor engines need all the help they can get, only my opinion, but I don't think K&N is the way to go. Also, to me, the older tractors look better stock that they do modified.
