Has anyone put a starter on a w-4. I purchased a W-4 without a starter and am trying to put one on it from a H. My parts book shows that the H and W-4 have the same starter. The starter I have is the correct bolt pattern but won't go into place because it's to long. Any help would sure be appreciated.

You DO NOT have to take the belt pulley off,but it may be just as easy.Take the bolts out of the cover on that side. Ithink one is under the belt pulley assembly but will come up enough.Take a small pry bar or big screwdriver or whatever you use to pry with and gently lift up on the cover and stick the starter in at the sane time.Once the starter is in place, but not bolted you can pull out your prybar and bolt everything back dow.Done it several times, today included!

I have a 46 W-4 with similar problem. I rebuilt the tractor and painted it, When I put it back together the starter was new. After everything was back together the starter wouldn 't work, I think I have a ground problem where it bolts to the trans housing but it is to much work to remove everything to get the starter back off so I have been crank starting the tractor for over 5 years now. Someday I will have the energy to take it back apart but it starts really easy with the crank now so why mess with it.

Come On! If you have a bad ground through your new paint job you don't need to pull the starter right out. You can slide it back far enough to get some sand paper in there and clean the surfaces.

Yeah! It made me scratch my head the first time.
You have to take off the belt pully drive. Its on top of the transmission and is in place with six bolts. One on each corner and two long suckers in the center. Lift the pully drive out, (part way is good enough, since its a heavy little thing.) There is a gasket around the seal but it is only a splash seal there is no pressure so if it gets damage you can probably stick it back together Ok.
The whole thing takes about 30 minutes R & R.
Should go just fine.

Take a bolt out of the transmission case where it hits on the back of the starter, hold you mouth just right and it should go. a few well placed cus words may help too.

Do you mean that the Bendix (nose) is too long, or that the motor hits the bell (clutch) housing?

Thanks so much for the replies. The back of starter hits the belt pulley drive before I can get it into place.
