Farmall Super A front end loader?

I've been looking for a Farmall Super A for our small farm. I like the look, and I think it'd be right for our purposes as a small vegetable market-farm. I've read in this forum that loaders and small Farmalls don't mix, but for our purposes - turning compost piles and carrying small hay bales on a 4-5 acre plot - I'm wondering if a loader might be feasible. The loader wouldn't be used much, nor would it be used for anything very heavy. Does anybody have advice on 1)whether a loader would work, and 2)whether loaders are available and, if so, where I might find one?

Thanks very much,
Bill, in sunny Alabama

Brilliant, Brian! Now, question: it's mounted pretty far forward, right? So cultivators could definitely be mounted on the rear, couldn't they? But not on the belly? And what make is the loader? Lastly, any idea where I could get a loader like that?

Thanks so much, Brian. Great pics, and what a lovely farm. Makes me long for some snow down here in Bama.

Loaders for a Super A are out there and will be adequate for the type of work you are talking about. You just have to understand the limits of that size tractor and treat it accordingly. However, the whole picture isn't that rosey. First off, an IH loader for that tractor commands a high price, wouldn't cost much more to buy some other model POS tractor with a loader on it. Other aftermarket loaders show up once in a while and would probably run less money. Also, mounting and removing a loader is quite a bit of work. You would VERY quickly tire of the effort to change back and forth between a cultivator and a loader.

I suggest you consider how much of your projected loader work could be done nearly as well with a platform carrier(or small trailer) and a rear mounted blade. These could be used with considerably less conversion effort each time.

Jim, thanks for the reply.

I'm totally new to this. Would I need to remove the loader if I was cultivating with the middle and rear cultivators only, i.e. I assume you're saying it would affect the tractor's balance to leave it on? Could you tell me what POS is? And also, please, what is a platform carrier? I need the loader to lift and dump compost, thereby "turning" the compost in order to allow it to "work" the organic matter. Would a platform carrier do that? I don't think a blade would, but I may be wrong. I have seen a bucket that attaches to a 3 point hitch that might do the trick. But not as good as the loader.
Thanks again, appreciate the help.
Bill

Yeah, what Hugh said about removing the loader.

I don't know how big a compost pile you have, but you could turn quite a bit by hand for the effort involved in installing then removing a loader. Anything you could rear mount fairly easily, even if it only did part of the turning would probably be a better labor payoff than mounting a loader.

POS means "piece of 'stuff'", used to describe something that is either worn out or beat up or both to the point it has little value. If it runs at all it would be adequate for your small amount of use.

A platform carrier is a flat deck that mounts on the back of a tractor. I was suggesting it or a trailer for your "carrying small hay bales" requirement, not for turning your compost.

Thanks, Jim, I guess there's still a possibility of finding a loader that will sit forward of the rear mounts, (but I guess not the belly) like the one shown in Brian's pictures. But other than that (which looks iffy at best) I'll take all the good advice I've been given and move in another direction, probably toward getting a utility tractor.
Cheers,
Bill

Bill: The loader does have to be completely removed, so cultivators will mount. This is not for balance but rather one will not fit there while other is in place. Your probably looking at a days work changing from loader to cultivator.

A good loader for the SA will cost you more money than a good H with a loader on it. Supply is the reason, not many loaders around to fit SA. The original buyers knew better. The H will stand up to modest use on a loader. The SA will not.

Got it, Hugh, thanks. As per your earlier response on what tractor to get, it looks like a slightly larger utility tractor might be best. I just like the size of the SA, and I'm stubborn, I guess.
Happy New Year,
Bill

Hey Bill!

Whoa be it for me to tell you how or what size tractor to get.

You can put a loader on any tractor. I've even seen the things on little lawn tractors. Check with your local machinery dealer and they can put you onto a manufacturer who builds a loader for just about any tractor.

However, in a whisper, I will say to you that I cannot imagine getting anything smaller than an H and still want to be able to do chores around a farmstead. To me, a H is even too darned small, but then, I'm an old guy too.

This is just my view and opinion,

Allan

Yeah, Allan, but what's the hurry at our age? And plus, you can see what you're doin' with an A, and we're only farming a couple acres for now, and everything else is so expensive for a tractor that'll only be used for cutting cover crops and tilling them in and that other stuff I mentioned. Maybe 50 hours a year tops. If I can get a tight one w/ loader, I think I'm in high cotton.

Glad to hear that they're available. But I don't want one that extends way out over the front end like I've seen some of the older models do. I'd like it to be scaled to the size of the tractor. You think I can find one?

Thanks a million for responding. All the best, and Happy New Year,
Bill

I think if used right a loader on a Super A would be ok. My Dad bought a SA in the fall with a loader on it a few miles from the guy I bought my SC from. The loader works great can't see any problems with it. Kind of wish now I would have seen the SA first. Will try posting a pic of it here if it does not work there is a pic posted on the Tractor Photos page.

Hi Robbie Dad sure likes the tractor it is one handy thing to have around. He went at it and painted it all up just using spray bombs, got that little gallop out of the engine. He thinks it has more power then his other Super A with the front blade he has. I was thinking maybe this is a newer SA and has the bigger engine in it same as the SC have that I have read about. Someday when I have time I will get the numbers off the block and try to figure it out. I am sure I will be borrowing it this summer to do some landscaping at my house. It will sure be eaiser then a shovel and wheelbarrow. Happy New Years All

Hi Terry, Thanks for the response. That looks like a nice SA. How difficult would it be to take the loader off in order to mount cultivators on the belly? According to other responses, it'd be a real pain. But, then again, my farm is small enough that maybe I only need them on the back most of the time, and it looks like the loader arms don't go back that far(?), so they wouldn't be in the way there.
Thanks again,
Bill

Bill, the problem is that the loader uses the same mounting points as the cultivators. Please believe all these experienced folk when they tell you it will be a royal pain in the petard to take the loader off to use the cultivators.

Ahhh, now I see, the mounting points. Merci, Novel Idea Guy, you've saved me from being hoisted by my own petard once again.

Thanks for posting, all a y'all, and have a Happy New Year! I'll hoist one tonight for all who contribute to this fine list.
