An electronic ignition kit and a 40,000-volt coil will improve horse power.

My M is a 1950 and it runs quite well. An 8 & 1/2 foot disk would be no problem. I pull a 10 foot Pittsburgh Harrow Company disk with no problem. Our M has the 4 1/8 firecrater kit & we took 1/2 of an inch off of the head. These things in combination with a clean carb, etc. seems to make it pull well.

1/2 inch is a lot to take off. I would think that you would get into the water jacket.

I would imagine that by now the old girl has already been equipped with the 4 inch overbore kit so we can rule that out, unless it's time for a rebuild anyhow. The next thing is to make sure that everything is in good tune, plugs, points, timing, plug wires, and all that stuff, which you probably already knew. One thing that can make a big difference is the valves, if the M hasn't had the valves reground in a while, you are losing horsepower. Also, make sure the valve clearance is correct. One other thing I will mention is the governor, make sure it is operating properly and giving the full rated RPM, a sluggish governor will really hurt performance. You can even "tweak" the gov a bit to give it a few more RPMs, within reason, more speed will not hurt the engine.

I would suggest taking a compression test before pulling the head. If you have 120 psi or more and all holes are within 10% of each other you won't gain much with a valve grind. You can also look for a different head that might have a smaller combustion chamber giving you a higher compression ratio.ax

My 2 cents.

How do you "tweak" the governor? The owners manual on my 350 simply tells you take it to a dealer for adjusting. I have great compression (150PSI) and it seems to run fairly well but I can't get it run past 540 PTO speed to save its life. Sorry to hijack the thread.

First, you need a good stiff spring in there, with very little slack, then it's just a matter of backing out the limit screw until you get the rpm you want.

I forgot to mention the governor spring, it needs to have the tiniest amount of slack when the engine is at an idle, if it's loose, replace it, it could mean a world of difference.

I also have a 52 M. Does yours have IH disc brakes like a super M? mine does. Not sure what you have to adjust to get more power but someone on here will tell ya. I had to send mine into the shop to get fixed, i told the guy to turn it up, Now I got a 54 hp M thats as much as she would give, so you can probably expect that much to.

The serial # range for the straight M's with ih disc brakes is 294226-298218. Mine was the 1744th made. Some say its not rare, but to me it is.
