It's hard to believe that IH would build such a fine machine and not include a method of adjusting the steering box.
Considering there are probably several thousand Farmall M's still in service or being restored, I'm hoping that someone has come up with a novel method of tightening the steering box so the wheels can't turn crossways without the driver doing it. Or, better yet, is there any aftermarket kit available that will do the job?

Thanks for the info on the stop bolt but sorry guys, it looks like my exageration caught up with me. The wheels don't actually go crossways, but they certainly flop back and forth a lot. I replaced the u-joint in the steering shaft and tightened the worm gear brgs. The problem I'm left with is the play between the worm gear and the sector gear. The sector gear can't be moved closer to the worm gear or vice-versa. I haven't been able to find new gears so I was hoping that an after market kit consisting of a larger radius sector or worm gear may be available. If not do any of you readers have a magical solution? The bolster bushings are actually quite good but I thought of machining concentric bolster bushings so the entire bolster shaft could be moved over. Has anyone tried that? Thanks for whatever info you readers can give me.

I had that problem (worn worm & sector gear) on a Super H. It also had badly worn bushing under the sector gear. Solved both problems by slitting a new bushing shell before inserting it, then adding shim stock between the bushing bore and the bushing OD on the side away from the worm (left side of the tractor) to close up the bushing shell and offset the pivot shaft closer to the worm. Took some trial and error to get the right shim thinkness but managed to coax the sector gear about .030 closer to the worm which effectively took up the slop.

Another possibility: Look carefully at the wear on the sector gear. It MAY be possible to shim the pivot shaft thrust bearing (at the bottom of the pivot shaft) to move the sector gear lower in the gearbox and thus cause the worm to engage the upper (and hopefully unworn...) portion of the the sector gear teeth.

Punch below for a photo of the stop bolt. The extended bolt head fits up into a crescent-shaped slot in underside the bolster casting and thus limits how far the front wheels can be turned left and right.

Sounds like the stop bolt on your has been replaced with a regular hex head bolt!

D,

Sounds like you are missing the stop bolt in the right front corner.

This bolt has a double-tall head and runs in a channel in the bolster to control end to end travel of the front wheels.
