To all those of you in Farmall Land, a John Deere guy needs your help. I inherited a B Farmall from my family. The serial tag is missing, but I am told that from the casting number on the head that I should be able to come pretty close to the year that it was built. The casting number is 6716DB. All I have is John Deere information and don't know where to start looking on the Internet to get B Farmall info. Any help would be appreciated.
Humbled and embarrassed,
Rob Helton

My Dad has an old tractor that still runs good in his garage. I have found these things on the tractor: McCormick, Farmall cub, and a serial number 354383R1. What is this tractor worth?

6716DB is the part number of the cylinder head. A part number won't usually tell you much about the age of a particular tractor. The head was changed over the years and this is the early one. So if it is the original, you probably have a relatively early one. The engine number is where it was already described. It is nearly obscured by the governor control rod. Engine and serial numbers matched until serial 201000, after which they ran fairly close.

Thank you to all who have replied already which only increased my curiosity as I am seeking the serial number for a B Farmall. The serial number plate is missing off the seating arrangement where it is usually located but thanks to all in the tractor world. I found some more numbers on the engine block that may lend a hand to me for those who know Farmall tractors. I found FAB138473 stamped into a plate in the upper right hand corner of the block and I found G342DH behind the oil filter that was in raised letters. On the lower right hand corner of the block were the numbers 9.9.0. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated and thanks to all in advance.

The cast in number (which is 6342DH) is the block part number. The engine number should have a prefix FABM. I will guess you just missed the M and the number part is 138473, which means it was originally installed in tractor serail FAB138473. That would be 1945. The cast in 9.9.O is a date code for Sept 9,1945. Look at other major castings. If most have dates fairly near 9.9.O, the engine is probably still in the original tractor.

Are you sure the serial number tag is missing? It most likely will be on the left seat support bracket but it might be on the peddle guard between the brake peddles I think. Dave

Look for the engine serial number. It should be stamped on a raised, flat boss located on the right-hand side of the block, below #1 sparkplug, kind of behind the magneto.
2 things to remember: 1, after serial number 201,000 or so, (Jim Becker will know the exact number) block serial numbers and tractor serial numbers weren't the same number 2, if the block on your tractor has been replaced, the engine number is meaningless for dating the tractor.
If that doesn't work, you can get an approximate date by finding the date codes on the major castings. They will look something like 12*14*K. This would be December 14, 1942. The * will look like the head of a screw. The year is in code. I is 1939, J is 1940 and so on through the final year of B production 1947 which is Q.
Hope that helps some.
