Every time I rebuild these non running F-20's, M's and H's I end up investing more than expected. I buy them mostly complete but stuck for $500 or less, and by the time the engine is rebuilt, 12 volt conversion done, paint, decals put on, I sit back and tell myself I could have spent the invested money and bought one in as fine condition! I just laugh, I fool myself that I'll save money rebuilding them myself, but really it is just a fun hobby I guess.

I"m doing it because my dad (92) gave it to me last month. I thought, "big deal", but my dad knew best. He knew I would be the best shot at reviving the dead 400, which I did.

The fire has been lit, I have spent most of the last month getting life back in the beast, fixing things, changing fluids, etc. Next, I will split the engine to change the clutch --- that should be interesting. Then, --- ah, you know.

This is the most fun I have had in my (sad) life.

I do it for more than fun. I do it to stay alive. I think I would be a mental wreck without my tractors. They are everything to me. It's beyond fun...it's a life.

It's not the money. It's not the type of parts or the correct or the collection. It's the completion and pride that you take in making a piece of history look like it did in all it's glory. A hobby yes, but it's always going to be more than that for us. It's well beyond a hobby. It's a passion.

So I have to admit I never have rebuilt an old tractor. I just keep maintenance up (which is really very little on the ones I use) and keep buying more with the intention of at least painting one someday.

I work on mine because I use them. If you are collecting, you should buy the best that you can afford. It will be much cheaper than restoring a car, bike, or tractor. If you just like old iron, sorry, you're hooked.

I fix them to use an enjoy, sure is alot cheaper than buying a new one an they last longer LOL. It keeps me out of the gin mills an I enjoy it much more than falling off a bar stool BOFL. I also enjoy bringing history back to life, why else would, like you, invest over $2,000 or more in somthing that was all rusted up, stuck an look like scrape most times I buy one :o)

I enjoy fixing tractors because:
1. My age doesn"t matter
2. Keeps me out of trouble
3. Something the family can do together. I"ve helped Dad and Grandpa fix lots of tractors, and then have fun showing them off together.
4. Useful in other ways; last year, I wrote in an essay contest of how restoring a tractor was related to "Being the Best I can Be" (By the way I won, and can send a copy to anyone who wants to read it)
5. Just plain enjoyable.

In my case its needing a low-cost piece of equipment for a purpose, one that parts are still available for readily.I am no stranger to mechanical things, but tractors (large ones anyway) are something new to me.The learning experience is worth the price of admission alone...not to mention that thru it all you still own the tractor! And the fact that its a 50 year old tractor should help down the line in the resale/collector value should I need to sell.Basically, its a case of a 1955 vintage piece of heavy equipment being able to fill the needs/wants/requirements better than anything else could, all things considered. (a new Kubota 4x4 diesel for dozens of thousands of dollars? I dont think so).

Nope, I don't work on old IH's just for the fun of it. Being a rancher, I fix the ones I have up with the intent of USING them. Even though it may cost lots more to restore an old tractor than you'll ever make back by selling it, it's still WAY cheaper than going out and buying a "new" tractor of the same horsepower rating. At least that's my outlook on the cost issue.

Now, I do have to admit, we do have new tractors on the place(not gonna mention their color) and that my F-20 will never be the "primary" mowing tractor on the ranch, and my 650D probably won't ever be the tractor that's called on to get the feeding done every day. Mainly the jobs that are done with these older tractors are the smaller jobs...sometimes even jobs a guy comes up with just for an excuse to use the old tractors ;). But they're still getting things done that'd normally reqire putting hours on an expensive newer tractor that's way overpowered for the job at hand.

If I wasn't working on old tractors I'd be working on something else. I'm more of a "function over form" type of guy. If I put effort into fixing something up, I wanna be able to USE it. I used to build hotrods...and to really "use" one of those for what they're built for is kinda hard on drivers liscence points...At least with my old tractors I can use the heck out of 'em, stay outta jail, and actually be accomplishing something at the same time. Best of both worlds!

Depends, I have several reasons I fix(ed) my own.

First, I want to know what I have. If I buy one already fixed up, I don’t know what is in it.

Second, most of them were bought new by my family, so have a sentimental value to me.

Third, I can’t afford to have someone else do it for me.

Fourth, I like to be able to say that I did it myself! (Notice I didn’t include because it was cheaper to fix it myself, because it usually isn’t). I also do my own remodeling in my house, for the same reason. :>)

I got started with my grandfather's 1936 F-20 and 1929 Regular. It really was not a question of making money since I was never going to sell the tractors. They were/are part of the family history and heritage. Since then, I have acquired several others, many for free (just haul them off...). Even free tractors cost money. But, I could not have bought the tractor my grandfather had for any kind of money in any shape. I just had to do it myself, for the fun of it.

Enjoyment is what the hobby is about to me. I respect those who buy a tractor all fixed up but for me the process of bringing an old tractor back to life is what I want to do. I still think the hobby isn't so expensive as other hobbies. I don't have to travel on an airline, like to go ski in an expensive resort, and loose baggage in the process to enjoy my hobby in the back yard!

Sure you can buy one all done, but what kind of joy is that?. It's a lot of fun to end up with a nice piece of equipment, and the members of the tractor club like to see pictures of it all tore apart and then see the finished product. Theres alot more pride built into a tractor that you had to fix yourself.
Happy restoring!

Saves me more money then my previous hobby. It was private charity were I crammed dollar bills into the G strings of scantily clad women who had lost their way in the world. Since then my wife taught me that charity is best started it home, only now its consists of me putting my paycheck in her purse.
