656 Loader works - almost (pics)

Hey guys,

Hope you had a good Christmas. You'll have to look what I bought myself - found a used Westendorf WL30 for under a $1000. My Uncle helped me install it - it works well .... except the lift arm operation.

We are trying to set up the lift arms on the outboard remote so that pulling the lever back raises the arms and pushing forward drops (seems logical for float as well.) After getting the Deere adaptors on, we tried it that way.

It lifted fine, and pushing the lever ahead to drop - it stayed in that position. We had to get another loader (yeah, a JD 3020) to ease the tension on the hoses to pull them off.

Now the interesting part - switching the hoses in the ports allows the loader to work - backwards, but it does raise and lower. It seems wierd to push forward to raise - and then a little further to float (where it drops).

Fluid and filter were changed recently - I did notice a little milky-white in the fluid when detaching the hose on the lower right-hand port.

Any advice?

Eric First of all the 656 has no single to double switching to do. There should be a stop so it can not go into float if you don't want it to. I would say you don't have the same couplers on the hose as the tractor and they are locking up on you. You can't use ball to point, you need ball to ball ot piont to point. O yes you minght get by for years and then one day o we don't like each other any more we ain't going to work any more so we lock up"""""

Have checked if your hydraulic outlets are set for
single or dual actions cylinders?

LAW/MN,

How do I determine the setup - I assume it is set up for dual as the left ports work just fine - I can lift the front of the tractor with the bucket tilt.

Thanks,
Eric

Nice set up and a good price! How easy does the unit go on and off? I am looking for a loader for my 560. I went to an auction in Ireton, IA three weeks ago that had a WL40 that came off a 656. That looked real easy to take off. It sold for $1600 and needed a new bucket.

If you can, switch the bucket tilt hoses over to the outlets that you have the raise and lower in and see if the bucket tilts. Take the whole conglomeration, adapters and all to make sure that it is a good test. When you do this, check the couplers on the tractor to make sure that all four are the same. I’m guessing that the bucket will work properly, telling you that the problem exists with the couplers as others have suggested.

If you are planning on using the loader only on this tractor, once you have determined that the tractor hydraulics are working properly, I would put the correct ends on the hoses. That will eliminate one restriction in the line.

I have never had problems with adapters and use them some because of the difference in coupler styles between the ISO (like the old Pioneer and the newer standard couplers) and the large ones that IH used on the 66 & 86 (and probably others) series tractors, especially on equipment that I used on both (like a baler). I have had problems mixing couplers between styles and brands as others have mentioned, so keeping them the same is important.

Do you have the right IH tip for the ones on the tractor?

That has happened to me acouple times. I forget what coupler combination caused it though. I think it was IH"s pointed tip females on the tractor and I had pioneers with the ball males. Anyhow, a if you combine them a certain way it locks up like you describe. If it were me, I"d buy male couplers like ones you know works and put the new ends right on the hoses..... .....Ditch those adapters. They are a PITA IMO.

Hi Eric,

Pretty darned snappy lookin' outfit ya got there. I think if I lived down in your part of the country that I'd have to own one of those loaders. I really like the looks of 'em.

The only thing I can think of is your adaptors. Don't 'spose you are cross breeding the JD ends with the IH ports, or something? If the darned tilt works okay, why shouldn't the lift?

Does the tractor's hydraulics work okay on a normal double acting cylinder? Maybe you have a messed up drop valve or some darned thing.

What you are trying to do should work.

Dunno, hope ya get 'er figured out,

Allan

Allan,

The bucket (left port) works just fine - I assume I have pioneer ends on the tractor - as the rear ports have worked just fine so far with new pioneer parts (bought some new hose tips for other implements). How does a guy determine what he has. Sorry - I'm kinda new to hydraulics.

Eric

Eric,

Unplug your tilt hoses and plug the lift hoses in their place. If the loader now lifts and drops properly you have a bad hydraulic remote unit on the tractor.

If it acts the same as it did on the other remote, then the trouble lies in the loader or it's hydraulic configuration.

The first thing you have to figure out is where the trouble lies.

Allan
