If it is originally yellow, it was an industrial model of some sort, particularly with the reverser. Utility? If you straddle the transmission when you sit on the seat it is a utility, if not, it is or is similar to the row crop. Also, the utilities were Internationals, not Farmalls. As to the year, you are missing at least one number in front of the 175 as the first one produced was SN 501. Otherwise you have to use casting codes in the format of 1*8*G (Jan 8, 1961), where the * looks like a screw head and the letters run from G, 1961 to N, 1968. 375574R1 is the part number of the transmission cover.

CNKS , I appreciate your help . What I can find looks like 1753 J . Is this possible ? Also I found the screw heads marking the casting number next to the brake pedals . It is ,best i can tell
1* 25 * H . The H is a little hard to see. new paint. You do straddle the transmission too.So according to your explaination its a 1962 .built january 25 . Do you have any idea what the J may be ? Thank you ,,

The particular part you refer to was CAST on Jan 25. Most castings sat around for a few days/weeks before they were used. Each casting will likely have a different date on it. The exact assembly date for the whole tractor is hard to determine, but from your serial number it was probably Feb or March 1962.

.....sphargy42, hi..... ..assuming that the key is the same as for my international, the "j" indicates a rockford clutch..... .best wishes, bill

Thanks Bill , Mine has a borg & Beck in it because it has the three fingers design in it. Hard tellin who changed it before me. I always understood that rockford was the diaphragm design pressure plate. I remember because i welded one of the fingers back on 10 years ago. Did these tractors have live power on the pto ? Mine has no pto shaft in it. happy new year !!

Early ones had a dead pto, later ones, live, I don't know the serial # when live pto's were installed.

All 404s had transmission driven PTO.

i have a farmall 404 and an IH 2404. both tractors are very simalar. the 404 have a longer torq tube, thats the bigest differance. neither 404 or 2404's ever have a live PTO. it was possible to get a 404 rowcrop with a widefront end, but they are extremly rare. i'd like to see some pics of your 404. i could probally tell you what it was by looking at it. the 2nd lever on the 3 point control is the draft control. oh and by the way, you straddle the transmisson on both 404s, rowcrop and utility, and on 2404's (the 2404 was the industrial 404)
