Put a 12 volt battery in my H this summer and left the oringinal 6 volt generator hookup the same.It charges the 12 volt battery good. The 6 volt generator puts out about 14 volts at 8 amps at haft throdle.WHY go to all the work to change over to a alterator??? Yes I did change light bulbs and it has a mag. Also my generator has the one relay cutout, and I guess it could overcharge the battery if used at high charge after many hours of use a day. Correct me if im overlooking something. thanks

I have a Farmall 200 (1952) I am glad I saw this discussion, I replaced the generator with a 12 volt alternator from a pick-up. The battery seems not to hold a charge well and I have to recharge the battery. If I test the wire from the alternator it shows it is charging. I have one wire from the alternator to the positive battery terminal. I think from these posts that some are saying I need a different hook up. I keep exchaging the batteries for bad cells. Any advice??

Im told that a 1 wire alternator does not excite and start charging until it is first run to a high R.P.M.???? Not good on slow turning engines.

The one wire alternator is fine. The wire should be hooked to an ignition source terminal thats only hot with the switch on,this will excite the alternator and it will cut out as long as it has an internal regulator. The reason it drains the battery is because it is hooked to a source thats continually hot,and that drains the battery.

Possibly true. I know of an M with a one-wire alternator that works just fine. I've also heard horror stories about one-wire alternators. Everything from it taking lots of RPM to start the charge excitation, to stories of current leakback when the engine is shut off. I would say it all depends on how the alternator was built.

Look up Bob M's wiring diagrams. Wiring a 3-wire alternator is just not difficult. It would be less expensive too.

My Delco 1 wire excites with just a blip to 2000 rpm,and continues pumping out down to 500rpm.I run a master disconnect to shut off any drains.
Yes,1-wire alternators will drain in the milliamp range,it takes 1-2 months to really drain the battery though.

The old 4-bangers are hard to crank up to 2000 RPM. An M or H is usually governed at something around 1500 RPM.

Use the smallest dia pulley you can get. That will up the rpm as much as possible.Otherwise,a Delco alt can be wired with 3 leads (batt/key/indicator light) and then the low rpm deal wont be an issue.

SOmetimes they work that way... sometimes they don"t. With a 3-brush generator you can sometimes hop up the voltage a bit. For what it is worth, I"ve always thought that an alternator installation was cleaner than a generator installation. No need for an external regulator and no need to worry about the battery being overcharged or undercharged. And for those who are running a magneto, the installation is even easier. No need to a diode or indicator lamp. (Not that a lamp is a bad idea). Just hook the exciter wire up to a normally open switch and you"re in business.

John, did you change over to negative ground also?

I have an H that I have run that way for years. I have the same setup you do - a magneto ignition. I have had zero problems with it. I put in a 12 VR. It works fine. Irv

John, That is not uncomon acording to a old Allis guy in town for a generator to be set to the high setting, thus 14 volts. I run several of the old timers with a 12 volt battery, just unhook the generator wire. This is supposed to be bad for the generator. Another thing that I get away with is no resistor to the points, even though it doesn't cost much. The altenator is a big plus if you idle the tractor alot, as the generator probably needs 1/2 throttle to give it a kick. DAVE NE IOWA

Sounds like you got lucky and as the old saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it. Or you have a cut out that just doesn't cut out at 6 volts but a little higher
