Cold weather (-8 F) seems to accentuate ones stupidity, especially when that includes forgetting to turn the heat on last night in the crawl space with the water pipes in it. :>( The result was the better half didn't have water in the "makeup" room this morning. :>{

Had to resort to the old “standby generator and electric welder trick” on the frozen pipes this morning. At least the old M standing out in the cold shivering its PTO shaft off started right up! :>) In no time flat it was ready to come to the rescue with the generator humming away! About 240 amps and 20 seconds later the water was running and I was happy as a clam in warm ocean water, only wished I had resorted to this about an hour and a half earlier! :>{

Hope you all have a better day than mine started out! :>]

Captaink, I live in the south and don't get to experence the chills you guys have. I think the coldest I've ever been was in Cleveland Ohio at Cleveland Brown football game. Oh yea, as Mark Twain said one June in San Fransico was the next coldest. Have a Merry Christmas

Come on guys!
You sound like a bunch of wimps. Us Farmall guys are though! I posted a note a few days ago. It reached -35C (-21F) and a wind chill of -45C(-46F) The old W-4 took 15 minutes to start but I think the operator was the slow one there!

Maybe there tougher here in Canada! Ha!

I would think you guys should be tougher as I’ve heard rumors that in Canada, IH actually marketed a snowmobile for use year around! ;>) (Just kidding.)

Wimp, no, I don’t even consider putting on my long handles until it is at least -32 F.

As far as Allen moving to the Caribbean, I’m trying to figure out if it is because he thinks the temperature is balmy where he is at, or if there is so much sand it looks like a beach on some days. :>)

I have a step-niece that lives out in his neck of the woods, so it’s pretty hard for him to “snow” me with that Caribbean jazz… :>}

Mornin' Captn'

I spent 12 years up at Williston, North Dakota before moving back down here to the Caribbean in Nebraska. I don't wanna hear it!

Gawd! I hated it up there! Took the long underwear off on the 3rd of July and put 'em back on during the afternoon of the 5th! :>)

When you say moved south to the Caribbean, I’m trying to figure out if it is because of the temperature or so much sand that it looks like a beach on some days. :>)

Hey Scotty, you hook the weilder leads at each end of the pipe and turn it on. You need to know the duty statis of your weilder to determin how high to set it. Dads first weilder was a Miller and could have been older than me. It was copper wound and was a 230 AC, with a 100% duty statis. I have seen it run all day once at the top, at my Grandad"s about 300 ft, from house to tank across the road in the lot. It must be Galvatized Pipe.

One of mine was soft copper; it did take a few seconds longer to thaw out than the galvanized one, but still worked. Copper has less resistance to electricity than iron, but it will still warm enough to thaw out.

Scotty that is a question I can"t answer, I would think it would work,but don"t go on that. There seems to be a question of what thaws the pipes heat or viberation.

I vote for the heat. Iron has a fairly high resistance (when compared to copper or gold) to flowing electricity, therefore when an electric current passes through it, heat is created. It doesn’t take a lot of heat along the length of a pipe to thaw a very small track through, and with 40 PSI or so pushing it, once the water starts, it soon is thawed open.
