230 vibrating driveshaft

Hello and happy holidays!

I have been rebuilding a farmall 230 I got from my neighbor last fall. I got everything fixed and in good working order except this internal vibration and some heavy corrosion on the rear rims from leaking calcium. I got it to stop leaking however.

Whenever I use the clutch The vibration (quite loud shuddering sound) is the worst. I looked in the view hole in the bottom of the clutch housing and took a prybar and can wiggle the end of the drive shaft quite a bit where it connects to the engine. When the tractor is not moving but running I can hear the drive shaft rattle a little. When driving I can still hear the rattle, although It drives with no problems. Other than the rattle noise.

I only going to use this tractor for driveway matinance and snow removal at my home.

I am really not in to spliting the tractor, although I could do so with no problems in my workshop.

Any ideas as to what this is and availiblity of parts, and the consequences of not fixing it?

Thanks for any help.

Randy

One other thing.
Whatever your problem a vibrating transmission shaft will wear gears and bearings very quickly. I don't think this is a drive it anyway type of situation.
Good luck.

Randy:
When you say driveshaft, do you mean crankshaft or transmission spline?)
If you can move the end of the crankshaft with a bar you are looking at more than a pilot bushing. I'd be prepared for a big end bearing. Does it leak oil into the clutch housing?
Check you transmission and engine mounting bolts. Make sure the engine and transmission are bolted tight. This sounds stupid but it can happen.
If you hace crank bearing problems there is a manufacturers warning NOT to turn the crank on these models. It is a replacement item. Turning the crank goes below reissued specifications.

As far as those rims go; I removed my tires and resurfaced the inside with fibreglass resin. You can rebuild bad areas and it doesn't corrode.

Hi Randy, When ever you decide to split that tractor I would take a good look at that clutch assembly while you have it apart. It may be time to replace the clutch disc, there's places in Harrisburg that could probably reline your old disc. Hal

Hi, my vote as someone else suggested was pilot bearing.

Had SC that had same problem. Bearing is only a bronze bushing on SC with no method of lubrication.

I have a Super C like yourself and when I let out the clutch slowly it vibrates bad and then goes away when the clutch is all the way out. It sounds similar to what I read in that forum archive and you said you found that the pilot bushing was bad on your C. Anyway I can tell before splitting it, and what does it take to fix it after I do split it?

The transmission end seems tight. I cannot detect any movement with a prybar at that end.

Pilot bushing makes the most sense to me also. Good to know about the availibility of parts.

The old tractor sure does run good. And starts instantly in any tempature. It smokes some at startup but quits after it warms up. It seems to smoke more with the 10w30 in it than it did when I had the strait 30wt non detergent oil in it.

I wonder what is the better type of oil to run?

Probably the pilot bushing. The rear end of the driveshaft bolts up to a coupler on the front of the transmission top shaft, possible the bolts got loose or broken. Bearings on the top shaft could be going out, but then you would have other problems. Those are all of the possible causes, but I'm going with pilot bushing. You'll see what's wrong the second you get it split. Parts avalibility is exellent for these older IH's. Your dealer will be able to get you anything you need.

If its real loud wen the clutch is pushed in and quiets up wen left out your polit bearing needs replaced, (common on c su c 200 230) You may need to replace the clutch disc also. cliff

Hi Randy, It sounds like your spline may be worn where it connects to the engine. The clutch
disc may also be worn and the disc may be broken too.

At sometime you will probably need to tear into it. Parts are probably available
and you'll need to split the tractor so you can determine what parts are required. Hal

Hi Hal,

I will probably take a ride up to international in the next few days and take a look at the parts book to try to get an idea what I will need. I dont want to tear it down and have it setting in my workshop taking up space till I have the parts in hand. If that is possible.

Thanks For the help.
