Coolant leaking... making me CRAZY!!!!!!

I own a 1962 IH 404. I have changed the radiator hoses out, put a thermostat in (did not have one) and cleaned everything off. I reassembled everything using new SS hose clamps instead of the IH style hose clamps. The hose clamps that IH shows in the parts book are the ones with the single nut that you turn in that pulls the clamp tight and not the typical hardware store type clamps.

Anyways, I have tightened the hose clamps up as much as I can and I simplyt cannot get them to stop leaking coolant. I know it sounds crazy! but coolant keeps dripping out albeit very very slowly. Do I need to use the IH style hose clamps? Are they designed to hold much tighter? Can I put gasket sealant compound on the inside of the hoses to stop the leaking? I have replaced rad hoses so many times and have never had a problem like this. What a pain!!

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Phil

Try warming the motor up and tighten the clamps when hot. That is what we had to do on our Road trucks. Boyd

If you take it apart and inspect closely it may be obvious why it is leaking. Hose may be wrong sized or damaged. Sometimes the snout where the hose slips on is badly corroded, pitted or otherwise damaged. The clamps may be the problem.
A decent stainless worm screw clamp should work.
If snout is damaged or corroded use a sealer such as a gasket maker or even a PTFE pipe paste compound. Or silly cone will work as suggested below. If the snout is in good shape just a lubricant such as soapy water or a little antifreeze will help things settle in as opposed to assembling it dry.

I never did like the IH tower style clamps, always replaced them with the worm screw type clamps such as you mentioned when the need arose, so I doubt there is any problem with the clamps you are using. Assuming the new hoses are of the correct size, I would suggest following the advice given by Old in the reply below. I have used this trick myself, it works.

I've had that type of problem before, how I fixed it was to take some silicone sealer and wipe it on the inside of the hose then slip it on and clamp it down. Let it sit an hour or two before putting fluid back in the system.

Do you have the correct hoses? If they are too big for the fittings, they won"t seal no matter how much you tighten them down, no matter how many clamps you use. The hoses should be a tight slip fit over the fittings.

Is the leak on a cast part? Did you clean it good?

If the leak is on a brass part it may be out of round.

Are the hoses cold? It may take a while to flow and seal the leak.

I've never had a problem with the stainless clamps so I bet you've got another contributing circumstance.
