Farmall 460 Gas: No oil pressure

Recently purchased 59 Farmall 460 Gas with 5600 Hrs on Tach from a dealer. Head mechanic said tractor was put on dyno and was turning out approx. 56 HP. The tractor starts fine and there is no blue smoke coming from the exhaust. After receiving tractor, I changed the engine oil and filter. The waste oil appeared to be a heavier grade than 30W and was free from any contaminates (anti-freeze). I replaced with Rotella T 20W for easier starting on cold mornings. Last week the tractor was used and the oil pressure gage seemed to be working. It would fluctuate with engine rpm"s and sometimes max. out. Yesterday, we started the tractor and we have no oil pressure. Is the oil pressure gage malfunctioning or is this a sign of something more serious? Is there any way of checking the oil pressure gage without purchasing another gage? I would appreciate any suggestions.

I would take the line off between the oil pressure gauge and the engine and make sure that it is not blocked. If you don’t find any blockage in the line, get a new gauge. I’m doubting that an engine would “max out” an oil pressure gauge one day and be so worn out the next to show 0, however as others have stated, if you don’t have any oil pressure, your engine won’t last long either.

Good luck!.

Hi Joe, I would do as Allan has suggested on
installing another pressure gauge so you can determine if you have oil pressure.

You can do serious damage if there isn't
any oil pressure. If you have excessive wear on
the rod, main and cam bearings that's probably
why you're showing no oil pressure. Hope it's the gauge. Have a Merry Christmas, Hal

Hi Joe,

You would think that if you had "no" oil pressure, you would be able to hear that engine "rattle". They get pretty noisy with no oil pressure.

I'd sure put a mechanical gauge on it to make sure tho. You don't suppose they filled 'er full of 50wt to sell the thing do you?

Don't wanna sound negative, but gotta tell ya, if that engine has never been opened up, you are way, way overdue for an overhaul. A gasser just doesn't go much past 5000 hours and if that bottom end is all wobbled out, that might be where your oil pressure is going.

Hope not; hope it is something simple.

Allan
