I had agreeded that I would install all of the new 12 volt electrical system. The one reservation was that I could do when no one else was around to help.

Well, today was the day. Installed a new Hitichi 12 volt alternator, balast resister, 30 amp relay, one way diode. Remodeled the mounting and tensioner and installed new belt. Then ran all new wire with new connectors. Used shrink tubing to combine the coil & alternator wires. Cleaned up & chrome painted the reflectors and installed new pig tails & bulbs but left them off until after the painting. Will also wait until after painting to put on the new plugs, cap & wires etc.. Took about three hours but wasn't trying to hurry.

I know a guy who has tons of farmalls, from a cub to a 1486, almost all the letter series, and number series tractors that originaly came with 6volt systems that he owns, came with 12 volt systems, they ripped out the 12's and put in 6's. I have had a few collectors tell me that 12 wrecks the tractors. How come you put 12 on the H and not keep it 6? The h's turn over fine with 6 volt. I would by a ticket on it no matter what voltage it is.

Most people around here converted to 12 volt, because a 6v turns slow, and the tractors are a little worn and a 12v spins faster and makes it start easier. My M was a little slow, rebuilt starter, turns over good, now. Another reason, 12v batterys are cheaper, easier to find, alternators are cheaper than generators, electronic voltage regulators are easier to use and work with, this is some the reasons I have been told.
