running rough

My Super M starts and runs but runs rough. I am thinking that maybe its time for the valves to be ground. But, in the meantime, is there some fuel additive that I could try for an old girl like this to burn out what might be carbon build-up or whatever and maybe have it run smoother? I'ld like to postpone taking her apart til I retire, in a couple of years, and have the time. Thanx--and Happy Hollidays

It's alawys easiest to expect the worst.

Concentrate on the simple problems first.

If this is a recent problem, and the tractor is lightly used, do you have stale gas in it? Is there water in the gas? Have you cleaned out the carburetor lately? Are the points in good shape and adjusted right?

Does it warm up, or is the thermostat stuck open?

A little water spray from a mist bottle into the carburetor at fast idle does wonders for eliminating carbon, but unless it is knocking or diesels after you kill it, excess carbon is probably not the problem.

First thing I'd do is a full tune up. Change the wires and clean up and/or rebuild the carb. If she still running rough then go deeper. Maybe a compression test. You may find it fixed with a tune up or new wires. How's it do as far as smoke. any smoke when running? What color? Does it smoke when first started?
