I would like to start off by thanking Justin Weber for the easy transaction that took place when I bought a NOS block from him. Justin had an original NOS Farmall F-20 engine block still in the crate. I bought the block and he delivered it yesterday. Now for my problem .I'm torn, do I use the NOS block in my tractor or do I just keep it in the crate the way it is. I wondered to myself if that engine block is the only new engine block left, anywhere. Do I use it or do I just keep it. Kind of neat having something 70+ years old but new. What do you guys think I should do. I currently have an engine block for the tractor but it still needs decked and new studs.

Well fellas I appreciate all of the feedback. I"m still not sure what I"m going to do yet. If I decide to use the block I will take lots of pictures and document the occassion.

If you bought it for your tractor then put it on.If you want a show piece then keep it in the crate.

Name brand SA motor oil in the metal cans is certainly worth more in the can than in the engine. I don't get your point.

Since nobody answered your question, I'll put in my two cents.

I always hate to use NOS parts for the reason you mention. If you build up a new engine, in one year it will be no better than a good rebuild. And you won't have a NOS block. I guess I'd try to collect a complete NOS engine while parts are still available but not assemble it.

I have to admit I have NOS parts that I can't bring myself to use. Like the box of straight baling wire with the loop on one end. The guy that gave it to me, said "now go use that old baler". Ledger plates, and rivets in the 60 year old boxes.

The NOS parts will be gone one of these days. I think the packaging is sometimes as interesting as the parts.

I've seen guys get NOS parts, tear the box open and install. I cringe.

I don't know. I have a NOS crankshaft, maybe you could build a new engine!

You know.... I come from a family that keeps everything, absolutely everything. I see the piles and piles of "stuff" most of which not used or even admired. So.. getting to my point, what is the true value of a NOS crated engine ? If you ever thought you could build a tractor out of NOS then that would be worth holding on too, but if not, then I would problably take pictures for archives, and then install the engine taking extra care knowing full well that you will probably never have the opportunity to do this again. I would hope it would inspire you to take extra care of that tractor.
