I have a Super M I'm planning to switch from LP to gasoline. The previous owner said the LP was an aftermarket kit. He wasn't sure if the head had been altered. Would this converson consist of changing out fuel tanks and adding a carburetor or does it get more involved?

To change to gasoline will need carborator, fuel lines etc., probaly hood and gasoline tank. Have changed M and it runs fine. LP is good fuel but refueling gets to be problem. When we ran LP equipment we had nurse tank on trailer frame to carry fuel to field and it was still not as versitale as gasoline. The Ensign LP system used on IH factory LP and most IH conversions I have seen is not nearly as good as the Imco or Century system on competition in my opinion.

Marv, Before you do any thing rash Take a few pics of it. Both sides. and of the fill valves so we who are up on the LPs can give you correct info on wheather it is factory or not.
The Stage II SMs were the first IH tractors that were factory LP equiped. Like DWV said the tank on the Stage IIs were short crosswise tanks with the valves faceing rear.(to the seat)
Stage III SMTAs (only 500 made) were longwise tanks the the valave assembly being a mono-valve unit @ the 11:00 o,clock position , at the rear of the tank while sitting on the seat.
Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.
