Well I finally got it home. Borrowed a trailer pushed it on and off i went. Can't wait to get it pushed in the shop and see what it needs. This is the first SMTA I've ever been around there sure is a lot off small differences from the standard M

Just a quick question. Are the hood and grill on the MTA a bit different from the other M models? I was told the hood was about an inch longer due to the torque housing. Don't know what the grill diference is. Sure hope to pick one up sometime soon. Would look good betweem the 44 M and the 51 M DIESEL I have restored in the shed. Migraine

MTA hood is same length as the MD tractor you have which is longer than M or SM gas tractor.
The reason hood is longer is the front bolster is moved farther forward on MD,SMD,SMTA and SMTAD
than M and SM.

The hood and the grill seem to be the same. The bracket fot the starter and the choke are mounted different. So is the rear housing where the pto shaft comes out. Kinda neat to compare the two my M and SMTA are setting side by side. So far I've got the head off and the pan off and I might be lucky and just need sleeves and pistons. Got about a gallon of water out of the pan then good clean oil.

I was always a JD guy as my dad worked for them for 28 years. I ran several Ms for a guy but had limited mechanical knowledge on them. A few years ago a guy told me he wanted to sell his old M, thought it was a Super. It was stuck, bad tires etc but had after market 3 point. Wasn't especially interested until he said he'd sell for $100. Noticed some strange things about it also, live PTO and extra lever on left side. Was a SMTA. After putting in pistons and liners, engine bearings, rebuilt TA, rear wheels and tires, camshaft and some other stuff is now a great tractor. Used it without the TA for a couple years but glad I rebuilt it is a really handy feature. Would still like to have wide front and PS. Good luck on yours, what is it needing? Got a lot of help on mine from the board here. Don't know that I had ever noticed any of the SMTAs around here either but they look a lot like an M.

Mornin',

Been wondering how you are coming with that project; haven't heard much outta ya for a few days.

I hear what you are saying; I think most of that generation of IH tractors around here got skipped. Guys went straight from the Ms and Hs to the 400s and 300s.

What are your plans? Drop in some liners/pistons? Or, are you gonna to a bit of tractor cross-breeding with your M?

I know where there is a rear housing for your M.

Allan

Well so far it looks as if it may only need pistons and liners. haven't dropped the pan yet but that is the next thing. The head looks good like it may have been apart not long ago. Is that rear housing close by ?? I kind of hate to get ride of my old M it purrs like a kitten.
